2508 CHAIR 3
Prepared by: Ignatov V. V. (3.201M-3)

2.

On the front is article 39 of the
Magna Carta, in the language
of the original Latin. The Latin
language says the rule "that no
one can be imprisoned without
the "lawful decision of his
colleagues", the basic principle
of jury trials around the world.

3.

The Magna Carta is one of the
oldest legal documents in the
world, partially valid to this day.
On the basis of this document,
English law, the ideas of
equality of people before the
court, protection of human
rights
and
other
ideas
developed. "Magna Carta" has a
Latin name and was written in a
medieval version of the Latin
language.

On the back of the chair is a
portrait of Cornelia Sorabji, the
first female practicing lawyer in
India. She became an advocate
for Purdue women in India
whose religious and cultural
systems prevented them from
speaking to men outside their
family.

5.

She could not defend people in court
because, as a woman, she did not hold a
professional position in the Indian legal
system. Hoping to remedy this, Sorabji
passed her Master's degree in Law at
Bombay University in 1897, and as a
lawyer at the Allahabad High Court in
1899. She became the first female lawyer
in India, but was not recognized as a
lawyer until the law was changed in 1923
prohibiting women from practicing law.
