1.Introduction
Description:
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate(SAP) is a stable vitamin C, it is an
active ingredient for sophisticated cosmetic skin-care products.
It protects skin ,promotes its development and improves its
appearance.
It is cleaved enzymatically in the skin to release active vitamin C.

4.

1.Introduction
Product No:
110023
INCI Name:
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate
Synonym:
L-Ascorbic acid 2-phosphate trisodium salt
Molecular Formula:
C6H609Na3P
Molecular Weight:
322.05g/mol
CAS No.:
66170-10-3
EC / List no.:
613-904-0
Structural formula

5.

2.Characteristic
1.Stable vitamin C
2.White or almost white powder
3.Similar effect with vitamin C

6.

3.Effect
1.Whitening, lightens hyperpigmentation
2. Antioxidant properties
3.Promotes collagen synthesis
4.Anti-inflammatory, anti-acne

7.

3.1Whitening, Lightens hyperpigmentation
SAP is converted to vitamin C and enters the cells, it can
significantly lighten existing black melanin by a reduction
reaction.

8.

3.2Antioxidant
Suppression of lipid
peroxidation by
topically applied SAP
compared with an
untreated area of
skin ,in 20 test persons.
The result show that 1%SAP formulation can reduce UV-induced lipid peroxidation.

9.

3.3Collagen Synthesis
Recent studies with cell cultures added with L-ascorbic acid-2phosphate have shown that vitamin C is one of the cell growth
factors that activate collagen synthesis.

10.

3.4 Anti-inflammatory
SAP has a strong
antimicrobial activity on
P. acnes, which is the
major bacterium involved
in developing acne
vulgaris.
Representative subject from the group treated with 5% SAP. Patient has apparent inflammatory and
non inflammatory lesions of acne vulgaris before treatment(left picture). The beginning of the study
(time point zero) is shown on the left panel as picture of the face and a magnification of the cheek,
whereas the right panel shows the promising result after a 12-week application twice a day.

11.

4.Application
Application:
SAP has already been used in cosmetics:anti-wrinkle products,
whitening products, protection formulations, body lotion, night
cream and day cream.
Dosage:
1. 0.2-2% in daily sin care products.
2. 0.2 - 1 % in sun care products.
3. >3% in lightening products.

12.

Usage
Solubility :It is possible to prepare solution of up to 64% in water(very soluble in
water),13.2% in glycerol and 1.6% in propylene glycol ,it is in soluble in ethanol,
isopropyl myristate, cetostearyl octanoate, caprylic/capric triglyceride and C1215 alkyl benoate.
Temperature:in the production of cosmetic care products,it is recomemended to
add SAP to formulations at a low temperature(<40℃).it can be exposed to higher
temperatures up to 80℃,but only for a short time, finished formulation should be
stored at below 25 degree.
pH use level :this product is most stable above PH 6.5.it is recomemed to use a
buffer system and add a cheating agent.
Compatibility:Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is compatible with most cosmetic
ingredients. however ,it is incompatible with heavy metals, low
pH,heat.moisture.
SAP show synergistic action of vitamin E,vitamin E acetate and Vitamin C for
antioxidant activity.

13.

Stabilty
SAP is far more stable than ascorbic acid in water.

14.

Stability of sodium ascorbyl phosphate in microemulsions
SAP was stable in both microemulsions with no significant influence of the location in the
carrier system ,After 2 months, more than 95% of non-degraded compound remained in both
microemulsions (Fig. 2). According to literature data and producer specification, ascorbyl
phosphate salts are among the most stable ascorbic acid derivatives. High stability is the
result of its chemical structure.
