1. INSURANCEMEDICINE
All working citizens of Serbia who
contribute to the Health Insurance Fund
receive a medical policy – «здравствена
книжица». The right to free healthcare
applies to children under 14, pensioners
and pregnant women. Foreigners who
have an official job in Serbia are also
given a "health book", and they can use
Serbian medical services for free on an
equal basis with local citizens.

2. THE HOSPITALSYSTEM
The main medical institution where the initial
admission of patients is conducted is called
the "Дом здравлья". There are such
polyclinic houses in all major settlements of
Serbia, and sick patients come here first of
all.

3. AMBULANCECalling a doctor from a state polyclinic at
home in Serbia is not provided. Only a
private doctor can come to the sick person's
home, and by "ambulance" means a special
transport that takes the patient to a
medical institution. Such an "ambulance"
comes only to patients who cannot move
independently. Emergency assistance is
provided absolutely free of charge in all
medical institutions to anyone who is on the
territory of Serbia.

4. HOSPITAL SYSTEM 2In addition to "Дом здравлья" in Serbia
there are hospitals, polyclinics, specialized
clinical centers, as well as doctors engaged
in private practice. In the last few years,
premium private clinics have been opening
in the country, offering a wide range of
expensive medical services. Not all local
residents can afford to go to such medical
centers.

5. THE ATTITUDE OFCITIZENS TO MEDICINE
If we talk about the attitude of residents to
their medicine, the Serbs are not very
satisfied with the level of healthcare in the
country. Citizens scold queues, low staff
salaries and old buildings. However,
hospitals are repairing, purchasing new
equipment, and introducing modern
information systems.
