5. A Trip to London
London, capital of Great BritainLondon, capital of Great Britain, its political, economic,
and commercial centre. It is one of the largest city in Europe.
Its population is about 8 million.
London is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster,
the West End, and East End.

Its official name is the Palace ofWestminster. Most of building was built in
1840 after the fire of 1834 destroyed the
old palace. AT the north end of the building,
by Westminster bridge, there is the famous
clock tower, Big Ben.

London has been a Royal palace, a prison, a
place of execution, a zoo, the Royal Mint,
and an observatory. Today it is a museum

place! Best British designers decorated it. It
was built for the Duke of Buckingham in the
early 18th century.

named in memory of Admiral Nelsons
victory in the battle of Trafalgar in1805.

Many scientist, writers, poets, and painters
are buried here: Newton, Darwin, Dickens,
Tennyson, Kipling, etc.

small ones. Two states are situated in the British
Isles: The Republic of Ireland and the United
