London, capital of Great Britain
London, capital of Great Britain, its political, economic,
and commercial centre. It is one of the largest city in Europe.
Its population is about 8 million.
London is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster,
the West End, and East End.

Its official name is the Palace of
Westminster. Most of building was built in
1840 after the fire of 1834 destroyed the
old palace. AT the north end of the building,
by Westminster bridge, there is the famous
clock tower, Big Ben.

This building was built by William the
Conqueror in the 11th century. The Tower of
London has been a Royal palace, a prison, a
place of execution, a zoo, the Royal Mint,
and an observatory. Today it is a museum
and houses the Crown Jewels.

Buckingham Palace is the official
residence of the Queen. It is a wonderful
place! Best British designers decorated it. It
was built for the Duke of Buckingham in the
early 18th century.

The Trafalgar Square is the
geographical center of London. It was
named in memory of Admiral Nelsons
victory in the battle of Trafalgar in1805.

Nearly all English kings and queens
have been crowned in Westminster Abbey.
Many scientist, writers, poets, and painters
are buried here: Newton, Darwin, Dickens,
Tennyson, Kipling, etc.

London has more than 3,000 doubledeckers. Most double-deckers have doors
and no conductor.

Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1920s. In 1985
most of them were replaced with modern
telephone boxes. A lot of people protested
that the old ones were put back in London.

Europe in the British Isles. The British Isles are
consisted from two large islands and a lot of
small ones. Two states are situated in the British
Isles: The Republic of Ireland and the United

Ireland.
