Measures what learners have learnt on a languagecourse – usually at the end of the course.
4. Diagnostic test
Identifies learners’ strengths and weaknesses. Helpsteachers to make decisions on what needs to be
taught
5. Objective test
Scored according to ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers, ie,non-judgemental on part of examiners.
6. Placement test
Used before the beginning of courses, to determinelearners’ language levels and place them in the
most appropriate groups.

Measures learners’ speaking abilities8. Proficiency test
Measures language ability and based on what isneeded for a particular purpose, e.g. English for

Compared to objective tests, the examiner judgeslearners’ answers
11. Summative test
End of year/end of course test measuring learners’overall achievement of course objectives.
