CONDITIONALS ARE CLAUSES INTRODUCED WITH
IF. THEY CONSIST OF TWO PARTS: THE IF -CLAUSE
(HYPOTHESIS) AND THE MAIN PART (RESULT).THE
IF –CLAUSE CAN COME BEFORE AND AFTER THE
MAIN CLAUSE.

Type 0 Conditionals are used to express a general
truth or a scientific fact. We can use when instead
of if in this case.
IF-CLAUSE
If +present simple
MAIN CLAUSE
present simple
e.g If you cut your finger with a knife, it hurts
Snow melts if the temperature rises above zero.

Type 1 Conditionals (real present) are used to express real or very probable
situations in the present or future
IF-CLAUSE
If + present simple
If + present continuous
If + present perfect
If +present perfect
continuous
MAIN CLAUSE
will/can/may/might/must
/should/+VERB
e.g If the weather is good, we’ll walk our dogs in the park.
If you drink much coffee, you won’t sleep at night.

Type 2 Conditionals (unreal present) are used to express imaginary
situations which are contrary to facts in the present and, therefore,
are unlikely to happen in the present or future.
IF-CLAUSE
If +past simple/past
continuous
MAIN CLAUSE
would/could/might+ VERB
e.g If I lived in the countryside, I would walk in the forest every day.
I would never do this if I were you.
If I were in a tricky situation, I would take this opportunity.

6.

Type 3 Conditionals (unreal past) are used to express imaginary
situations which are contrary to facts in the past. They are also used
to express regrets and criticism.
IF-CLAUSE
If +past perfect/past

MAIN CLAUSE
would/could/might+
have+VERB-3
e.g If I hadn’t missed the bus, I wouldn’t have been late for work.
If you had listened carefully, you wouldn’t have made so many
mistakes.
If I hadn’t taken the wrong way, I wouldn’t have met you
