Mahatma Gandhi - the political and
spiritual leader of the Indian
independence movement. Не had a
philosophy of nonviolence.
Mahatma Gandhi was a very influential
person among both Hindus and Muslims
,and so he tried to make peace between
these warring groupings. He was against
the division of the former British colony into
the Soviet Republic of India with a
predominant Hindu population and
Muslim Pakistan. After the partition, a
massive struggle started between Hindus
and Muslims. Nevertheless, Mahatma
Gandhi managed to partially reconcile
them. The point is that Hindu extremists
wanted to continue fighting instead of
cooperating, but the authority of
Mahatma Gandhi prevented this. That is
why it was conspired against him.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30
January 1948 at age 78.His assassin was
Nathuram Vinayak Godse, a Hindu
nationalist.
