Aspiration
is a burst of air that
accompanies a consonant
In English, [p], [t], [k] are aspirated at the beginning of words or
stressed syllables (unless they are preceded by [s]), but in
Russian they are not.
Compare:
pie, take, kin
but
pot – пот ‘sweat’
tot - тот ‘that’
cot – кот ‘cat’
spy, stake, skin.
Release is a burst of air at the end of words. In English, a release
is not obligatory for [p, t, k]. In Russian, the final release is
obligatory.
