9. Ithaca: A Paradise for Knowledge
Ithaca, Ithaki or Ithaka (/ˈɪθəkə/; Greek: Ιθάκη, Ithakē [iˈθaci]) isa Greek island located in the Ionian Sea, off the northeast coast
of Kefalonia and to the west of continental Greece.
Ithaca's main island has an area of 96 square kilometers (37 sq miles)
and had a population of 3.231 in 2011. It is the second-smallest of
seven main Ionian Islands, after Paxi. Ithaca is a separate regional
unit of the Ionian Islands Region and the only municipality of the
regional unit. The capital is Vathi (or Vathy).
Modern Ithaki is historically linked with Homer's Ithaca, the home
of Odysseus, whose twenty-year absence is part of the plot of the
classical Greek poem and allegory Odyssey of Homer.

13. Future Leaders Program: Venue: Ithaca Professional Lyceum
Ithaca Professional Lyceum is one of the few high schools in Greece specializing in training captains. Its maritime orientation is not accidental. The island has a great naval tradition and has given
numerous crews and prominent ship owners who played an important role in the transition of the Greek
shipping from sails to steam in the late 19th and early 20th Century.
The founder of naval education in Ithaca was Othon Stathatos (1843 - 1925), one of the most
celebrated ship owners of the island, who in 1906 - 1907 founded in Vathi the Othon Stathatos
Commercial and Maritime School. It was a model school with foreign teachers and continued its
operation until 1913 when the founder donated the building to the public for primary school.
The devastating earthquakes that plagued Ithaca, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos in August 1953 led to
significant changes in the island. A new high school building was erected with a donation from the
Swiss people after a fundraiser organized by the Swiss Hellenist Olivier Reverdin. To his credit, Ithaca
Professional Lyceum took the name Olivier Reverdin in 2008. Upon completion of the building in 1956,
the Naval Gymnasium of Ithaca was established by a Royal Decree as the second naval junior high
school in the country.
In addition to the Classical Gymnasium curriculum of the time, the Naval Gymnasium taught
Elements of Marine and Maritime Art, Shipbuilding and Machine Parts, Naval Geography, Maritime
Law, and Merchant Marine History.

19. Future Leaders Program: Full day trip around Ithaca Educational Excursion
Full day trip around IthacaWe begin our tour of Vathi, the modern capital of Ithaca, and we take the first
information for the history of the island: Ancient Ithaca Odysseus’ homeland,
medieval Ithaca a part of the Kingdom of Sicily, the Venetian domination, the
French, the British... On this day, we will see the consecutive residential
centers (capitals) of the island (now Vathi, before Paleochora, before
Anoghi…).
We walk along the seaside road, in the “Strata Marina”, and we see
panoramic views of the seaside settlement: the harbor looks like a huge water
square; in the middle of the harbor is the islet of Lazareto and opposite Neritos
Mountain, which closes the entrance of the bay, so that the port looks like a
lake. This unique, natural harbor was made by the Venetians the capital of
Ithaca. Around the harbor, amphitheatrically, is the beautiful seaside
settlement of Chora. On the steep hillside of the Petaliatiko Mountain, we see
the ruins of Paleochora, the old capital of Ithaca, and on the left, in the
background, mountainous Perachori village.
On the seaside road and in the near narrow streets we see many exquisite
examples of the settlement of the Venetian and British domination, buildings
standing up in the course of time, large two-storey stone-built mansions with
admirable proportions, monumental entrances, and beautiful courtyards.
We visit the Metropolis church with the exceptional, fully sculpted and partially
gilt, wooden iconostasis of 1793 and the elegant 19th Century bell tower. We
visit the Folklore Museum, and we see many exhibits, in which the Arabic style
furnishings of Drakoulis's Mansion and the collection of children's toys of past
centuries impress.

20. Future Leaders Program: Full day trip around Ithaca Educational Excursion (Cont.)
We see the monument of Lord Byron and the historical church of SaintNicholas “of the Foreigners” with the icon Jesus “Elkomenos” which is
supposed by El Greco.
We leave Vathi and go up to the Neritos Mountain. Medieval period,
Ithaca belongs to the Kingdom of Sicily, piracy in Mediterranean Sea is
unverified, and residents must live in the mountain. Now capital is
Anoghi, safe at the upland of Neritos.
In the square of the beautiful stone-built old capital, we see the 1300th
great church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, with the
extraordinary Byzantine style wall hagiography of 1680 in five
consecutive zones, the wooden “Dodekaorto” (12 icons of Jesus
Christ life) of the 1821s, the two-storey “gynekonite” (a separated
place for the women), pitchers embedded in the walls for the acoustics
of the church, and the 17th century imposing bell-tower.
We visit the Kathara Monastery, we learn the history of it and we know
the arrangement and the different parts of a typical orthodox
monastery. Before leave, we see the unique view from the bell-tower
to Vathi for the necessary photograph!
We visit the traditional seaside villages Frikes and Kioni, one of the
most beautiful settlements at the Ionian Sea, and before the arrival to
Vathi we pass from Lefki for some more majestic views of the west
side of the island.

Homeric Ithaca Full Day TripHomeric Ithaca, Ithaca of Odysseus and Homer, has
two sides:
a) Ithaca of the archaeological data and
b) Ithaca of the Homer’s Odyssey data.
Someone who wants to know Ithaca has to cover these
two sides.
In our tour, we will cover them, with the places we will
visit and the exhibits and the other archaeological
findings we will see, also with the visual material we will
watch (photographs, maps, drawings, representations),
in constant comparison with the data of Odyssey.

23. Future Leaders Program: Homeric Ithaca Educational Excursion (Cont.)
We depart early in the morning to know the Homeric Ithaca…First we will begin our journey to the Archaeological Museum at
Vathi. We will learn about the Ancient Greek Civilizations in
order to locate Ithaca in the place and in the time of Ancient
World.
We are going to discover the great findings of the ancient town
of Ithaca (Alalkomenes) dating from the Protogeometric (10th
Century BC) to the Hellenistic period (2nd Century BC): bronze
coins from 4th Century BC with the form of Odysseus and the
inscription ITHA (= Ithaca), a microscopic bronze bust of a
bearded man with a conical cap identical to Odysseus, clay
vessels from the Protogeometric and Geometric period (10th-7th
Century BC) with original shapes. Especially the exhibits from
the “Dark Ages” (10th Century BC) are almost unique in Greece.
We see the two-sided statue of Odysseus and the bust of
Homer at the central square and we depart to Northern Ithaca.
Going to Northern Ithaca, we have a view of the Alalkomenes
citadel on Mount Aetos (“Eagle”). Here was the City of Ithaca,
which was renamed Alalkomenes from the homonymous city of
Boeotia which was considered the birthplace of Athena and
Odysseus (9th-8th Centuries BC).
We learn about excavations here by Heinrich Schliemann.

24. Future Leaders Program: Homeric Ithaca Educational Excursion (Cont.)
Just before Stavros village, we stop to admire the beautiful port of Polis and toknow the impressive history about the Cave in which the cult of Odysseus
took place.
We visit Stavros, the central settlement of northern Ithaca, with the great
temple of Sotiras (Jesus Christ the Savior) and the park with the bust of
Odysseus over the harbor of Polis with its thousands years of history Cave.
Here we see the representation (model) of “Odysseus Palace” by the Italian
architect Bruno Mazzali, comparing it with the Palace’s description in
Odyssey.
We visit the Exhibition “The Sea from Odysseus to Homer”, about Mycenaean
shipbuilding and navigation, including a representation in scale 1:10 of a
Mycenaean boat with total cargo, and the Exhibition “Throwing Light on
Homer’s Ithaca” about the Ithacan findings existing at museums out of Ithaca.
In a break, we sit in a traditional café to have a cup of coffee and taste the
“rovani”, a local sweet based on rice, honey, and olive oil, made only in
Ithaca, before the last and most important part of our day.
We visit the Archaeological Museum where we see the sections of the 12
bronze tripods and the fragment with the famous inscription EYXHN
ODYCCEI (“I pray to Odysseus”), found in the Cave.
We walk to the top of the Pelikata hill with the Protohelladic settlement and
the view to the “Three Harbors”.
And then we visit the Homeric “Melanydhros” fountain (“the fountain giving
dark water”) and the “Homer School”, the archaeological site with the citadel,
which is identified by the archaeologists excavators with the Palace of
Odysseus.

26. Future Leaders Program: Ancient Olympia Educational Excursion
Ancient OlympiaAncient Olympia was a major Panhellenic
religious sanctuary of Ancient Greece, where
the Ancient Olympic Games were held.
The site was primarily dedicated to Zeus and
drew visitors from all over the Greek World as
one of a group of such Panhellenic centers
which helped to build the identity of the Ancient
Greeks as a nation.
Despite the name, it is nowhere near Mount
Olympus in Northern Greece, where the Twelve
Olympians, the major deities of Ancient Greek
religion, were believed to live.
The Olympic Games were held every four
years throughout Classical Antiquity, from 8th
Century BC to 4th Century AD.
