2. What is it?
Rickets also called Osteomalacia is a disorder of the bones in our body that occursdue to Vitamin D deficiency, or the insufficiency of calcium and phosphates in our
body.
People with rickets have very weak and soft bones, and they are more susceptible
to have fractures.
It is rickets when it occurs in children between six and thirty six months old. It is
called osteomalacia when it occurs in older people.
3. Risk factors:
Age : children aging from 6 to 36 months experiencing rapid growth.Diet : a complete vegan diet.
Skin colour: Dark colour

4. Symptoms:
Symptoms of rickets include:pain or tenderness in the bones of the arms, legs, pelvis, or spine
stunted growth and short stature
bone fractures
muscle cramps
teeth deformities, such as:
delayed tooth formation
holes in the enamel
abscesses
defects in the tooth structure
an increased number of cavities
skeletal deformities, including:
an oddly shaped skull
bowlegs, or legs that bow out
bumps in the ribcage
a protruding breastbone
a curved spine
pelvic deformities

bone X-rays to check for bone deformitiesPhysical examinations

Cupping and fraying of metaphysisPoorly mineralized epiphyseal centers with delayed appearance
Irregular widened epiphyseal plates (increased osteoid)
Increase in distance between end of shaft and epiphyseal center
Cortical spurs projecting at right angles to metaphysis
Coarse trabeculation (not the ground-glass pattern found in scurvy)
Periosteal reaction may be present
Deformities common
Bowing of long bones
Molding of epiphysis
Fractures
Frontal bossing
