g chlorine and bromine.

As many as 159 countries — members of the UNO hav
e set up environmental protection agencies. Numerous
conferences have been held to discuss questions of eco
logically poor regions including the Aral Sea, the Sout
h Urals, Kuzbass, Donbass, Semipalatsinsk and Chern
obyl. An international environmental research center a
s been set up on Lake Baikal. The international organiz
ation Greenpeace is also doing much to preserve the e
nvironment. But these are only the initial steps that m
ust be carried forward to protect not only for the sake o
f the present but for the future generations.
