American cartoons

1. American cartoons

in those times…
NOWADAYS!

2.

The history of American cartoons started in 1914. Earlier, in 1906,
James Stuart Blackton had made some experiments drawing
moving pictures. But he couldn’t create a full cartoon character
with it’s own feelings and emotions…

3.

Only Winsor Mccay
could do that. In 1914
cinemas showed his
film “Gertie the
Dinosaur”. It was a
comedy about two
friends who made a
bet. One of them
(Mccay played him)
was sure that it’s
possible to make
brontosaurus alive. So
he drew a cartoon
about this animal and
won his bet. This
“cartoon in a film” was
a first American
cartoon with a unique
character

4.

5.

Felix the cat was the first famous character of the American
multiplication. It was a black-white cat with human’s arms and
legs. First he was showed in the mute “Feline Follies” cartoon.

6.

Felix was a hero of a lot of strange, surrealistic and funny situation. In all of
cartoons he faces with unfriendly world. He becomes a winner because of his
good luck and ability to make a good plan in a short time. Some people called
him “Cartoon’s Charlie Chaplin”

7.

8.

9.

In 1928 Felix faced with
his main concurrent, who
had to become the most
famous cartoon hero.
Walt Disney drew a
cartoon “Steamboat
Willie”. It was the first
sounded cartoon in
American history

10.

“Steamboat” had a very
important detail: a sound.
If Pat Sullivan – the Felix’s
“father” – was
concentrated only in a
hero and his adventures,
Disney added a new
character: a music, which
helped to understand
feelings and emotions of a
steamboat team and make
a cartoon more alive.

11.

12.

“Steamboat Willie” was the first cartoon of Disney’s golden era. After that world
saw a lot of cartoons about Mickey, his friends and other people and animals. All
of them had a lot of music, the real difference between “good” and “bad” heroes
and a happy-end.

13.

The Disney's version of a legend about the Ratcather from Hameln can show
the typical Cartoon of this era. The mayor and the Ratcather are
communicating using only songs, the face of the Mayor (who is a main
antihero) is very unpleasant. Moreover, at the end Ratcather lead children to
the happy country of sweets, not to cave in mountains as in original

14.

In the middle of
century American
Multiplication born
new heroes. They
were more cynic,
impudent and,
maybe, violent,
than Disney’s
characters, but
more clever. They
could analyze
situation and win
not because good
luck, but because
their mind. The
most famous
characters of this
time was Bugs
Bunny (warner
Brothers)

15.

Woody
Woodpecker was
similar enough
with Bugs Bunny.
Both of them were
harmful,
bothersome and
clever. On the
other hand,
Woody was less
calm and more
happy, crazy and
cheerful.

16.

The first full-length cartoon of Walt Disney was «Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs». Before that world saw full-length cartoon, but in these films was
absence of sound and color picture. All of us know famous story about Snow
White, which was work of Brothers Grimm. When Disney was a child, he was
seen short silent cartoon about Snow White. This film was inspired young
genius.

17.

What is secret of success of that cartoon? It was innovation in cinematic art.
We each know that famous plot from childhood, so talk about it not
necessary.

18.

Full-length cartoons of
Disney often name
«family films». Sympathy
not only young viewers,
but their parents
pulverize fawn from the
film «Bambi». In June
2008, the American Film
Institute presented a list
of its "10 Top 10"—the
best ten films in each of
ten classic American film
genres—after polling
over 1,500 people from
the creative community.
Bambi placed third in
animation.

19.

Famous «Tom and
Jerry» is an
American animated
series of short films
created in 1940 by
William Hanna and
Joseph Barbera. It
centers on a rivalry
between its two
title characters,
Tom, a cat, and
Jerry, a mouse, and
many recurring
characters, based
around slapstick
comedy.

20.

The cartoons about cat
and mouse are known
for some of the most
violent cartoon gags
ever devised in
theatrical animation
such as Tom using
everything from axes,
hammers, firearms,
firecrackers, explosives,
traps and poison to kill
Jerry. Because of this,
Tom and Jerry has
often been criticized as
excessively violent.
Despite the frequent
violence, there is no
blood or gore in any
scene

21.

Another famous cartoon that film production company is «Scooby-Doo». Each of these
episodes features Scooby and the four teenage members of Mystery, Inc., Fred, Shaggy,
Daphne and Velma, arriving at a location in the Mystery Machine, a van painted with
psychedelic colors and flower power imagery. This film started development of detective
cartoons.

22.

The Lion King is a 1994 American animated epic musical film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation,
released by Walt Disney Pictures and saved Disney’s traditions. It is the 32nd Disney animated feature film,
and the fifth animated film produced during a period known as the Disney Renaissance. In 2016, the film
was selected for preservation in «the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress» as
being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Themes, which show this cartoon, is very
important either for children or for adults

23.

The Simpsons is an American animated sitcom. The series is a satirical depiction of working-class
life, epitomized by the Simpson family, which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.
The show is set in the fictional town of Springfield and parodies American culture and society,
television, and the human condition. Since its debut on December 17, 1989, 637 episodes of «The
Simpsons» have been broadcast. Its 29th season began on October 1, 2017. It is the longestrunning American sitcom

24.

25.

Beavis and Butt-Head is an American adult animated sitcom. The show centers on two socially
incompetent teenage delinquents, Beavis and Butt-Head (both voiced by Judge), who go to
school at Highland High in Highland, Texas. They have no apparent adult supervision at home,
are dim-witted, under-educated and barely literate. Both lack any empathy or moral scruples,
even regarding each other. They will usually deem things they encounter as "cool" if they are
associated with heavy metal, violence, sex, destruction or the macabre

26.

In these cartoons important and classical themes gave away. They was
created for mass market, so there are we can see low-level animation and
humor.

27.

After that appeared new high level in animated cartoon in «Pixar Animation Studios». All of us
know cartoons of this animation studio: «Toy Story», «Monsters, Inc.», «Finding Nemo», The
Incredibles, «Cars», «Ratatouille», «WALL-E», «Up», «Сoco» etc.
We can see new themes about love, friendship, help, kindness, death, family values, morals, inside
beauty of human, happiness and etc.

28.

Toy Story is a 1995 American computer-animated buddy comedy adventure film.
The directorial debut of John Lasseter, Toy Story was the first feature-length
computer-animated film and the first feature film produced by Pixar. The website's

animation while heralding the arrival of Pixar as a family-friendly force to be
reckoned with."

29.

The last film of «Pixar» is “Coco”. This film shake to the core. Very pleasant, instructive and warm cartoon. The story follows a 12-yearold boy named Miguel Rivera who is accidentally transported to the land of the dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased
musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family among the living. The concept for Coco is based on the Mexican holiday
of the Day of the Dead. The website's critical consensus reads, "Coco's rich visual pleasures are matched by a thoughtful narrative that
takes a family-friendly—and deeply affecting—approach to questions of culture, family, life, and death." It was the site's highest-rated
animated film and ninth highest-rated wide release of 2017

30.

American multiplication had a long history from “Gertie” to era of Pixar.
Thanks to Disney’s full length cartoons today they became more kind and
full of feelings. On the other hand, today we can see a trend to make money
from multiplication. The most popular “Pixar” cartoons are made by one
scheme (lonely hero is meeting real friends). Other popular cartoons as
Simpsons or South Park are very cynic, violent and sarcastic: they are playing
on a market of adults. The golden era of Disney was a time of the most kind,
emotionally hard and deep cartoons. This trend was continuing some time
after Disney’s death, but later cartoons became more typical and humoristic
because of asking of market
