2. Description

Mariinsky theatre is a musical
theatre in St. Petersburg. One
of the most famous and
significant Opera and ballet
theaters in Russia and the
world. The St. Petersburg
Mariinsky theatre can be
proud of its history, because
the stage of the theatre on the
Theatre square has seen
Imperial, Soviet and Russian
productions. Loud world
premieres, the greatest
singers, dancers, composers
and conductors – all this was,
is and will be in the history of
the Mariinsky theatre.

3. History of the Mariinsky theatre

The history of the Mariinsky theatre Court
Opera and ballet performances in the
capital of Peter the great were given in the
30s of the XVIII century. Thanks to the
establishment of the dance school by
order of the Empress Anna Ioannovna
(1738), the theater was replenished with
professional staff. Half a century later, by
decree of another great Empress
Catherine the Great, the Bolshoi Stone
theatre (1783) appeared on Carousel
square, which added to the composition
of the Imperial theatres of St. Petersburg
and Russia. It was located in a building
that was later rebuilt for the St. Petersburg
Conservatory (1783).

The theatre was Built by architect
Antonio Rinaldi, the Bolshoi
theatre was amazing with its size,
Grand architecture, and a scene
equipped by last word of the then
theatrical equipment. The Russian
company performed alternately
with the Italian and French
companies, where dramatic
performances were held, and vocal
and instrumental concerts were
also held.

5. Capital reconstruction

History of the Mariinsky theatre in
1802-1803 Thomas de Thomon – a
brilliant architect and draughtsmanundertook the capital
reconstruction of the interior layout
and decor of the theatre, noticeably
altering its external appearance and
proportions. The new Bolshoi
theater, which acquired a
ceremonial and festive look,
became one of the architectural
attractions of the Neva capital,
along with the Admiralty, the
Exchange, the Kazan Cathedral.

6. Grand fire

However, on the night of
January 1, 1811 at the
Bolshoi theater broke a
Grand fire. For two days in
the fire, the rich interior of
the theater was killed, and its
facade was seriously
damaged. Thomas de
Thomon has made a project
to restore the theater. On
February 3, 1818, the
resumed Bolshoi theatre
opened again.

7. Name

This theatre was
named after Maria
Alexandrovna-the
Russian Empress,
the wife of the
Russian Emperor
Alexander II.

8. State academic Opera and ballet theatre

By government decree on
November 9, 1917, the
Mariinsky theatre was
declared a State theatre
and in 1920 it became the
State academic Opera and
ballet theatre ; in 1935,
the theatre was named
after S. M. Kirov (until
1992).

9. Staging's

Mariinsky theater continued
the great tradition of the first
Russian music scene, brilliant
performances of “Virgin of
Orleans", "Sorceress", "the
Queen of spades", “Iolanta" by
Tchaikovsky, "Boris Godunov"
by Mussorgsky, "Prince Igor"
by Borodin, "the maid of
Pskov", "May night", "the
snow Maiden" by RimskyKorsakov, "the Demon"
Rubinstein.

10. Classic performances

Marius Petipa continued the traditions of
his predecessors (1869). He kept the
classic performances of "Le Corsaire",
"Giselle", "Esmeralda". His "La Bayadere"
was the first major choreographic
composition. Creative collaboration with
Tchaikovsky led to the creation of musical
and choreographic poems "Swan lake"
and "Sleeping beauty". Mikhail Fokine
continued the pioneering tradition of
Petipa, putting in the Mariinsky theatre
"Swan" by Saint-Saens, "Les Sylphides" to
the music of Chopin, created in Paris, the
ballets "the Firebird" and "Petrushka" by
Stravinsky, "Sheherazade" to music by
Rimsky-Korsakov.

11. New performances

For the first time the
theater hosted the
premieres of the operas
"Demon" by Rubinstein,
"Prince Igor" by Borodin,
"the Queen of spades" by
Tchaikovsky; ballet
"Sleeping beauty" by
Tchaikovsky and
"Raymonda" by Glazunov.

12. New stage

In 2013, the old stage
was restored and a
new one was opened
for more monumental
productions requiring
more modern
technical means.

14. Now

Now the Mariinsky theatre is
renowned as the world-famous
largest Opera and ballet theatre
in the world, and many stars are
honored to perform on its
famous stage. On January 16,
1992 the theatre was returned to
its historical name – Mariinsky.
The creative life of the theater
continues, its artistic Director
and the Keeper of academic
traditions is the world-famous
Valery Gergiev.
