United States Merchant Marine Academy is afederal service academy that educates and
graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers of
exemplary character who serve America’s
marine transportation and defense needs in
peace and war. Academy is located in Kings –
point, New York.

New York - the central region of America. Thecity has developed infrastructure. There are many
public transport such as metro, bus, ferry and
taxi. In NY there is many Attractions: Central
park, The Statue of Liberty, Empire State
Building and more… In NY you can fined many
different food courts, shops, places of worship,
entertainment.

HistoryThe Academy represents Federal
involvement in maritime training that
is more than a century old. Since the
1869 Government has initiated
various programs to train its citizens
for service in the merchant marine.
The United States Merchant Marine
Academy, dedicated in 1943,
represents the realization of these
efforts.

Between 1874 and 1936,various Federal legislation
supported maritime training
through schoolships,
internships at sea and other
methods. In 1934, a terrible
fire occurred on board the
passenger ship MORRO
CASTLE. This fire
convinced the U.S. Congress
that direct Federal
involvement in effective and
standardized training was
needed.

volumes; special collections, periodicals, charts,
archives, rare books, microfilm, microfiche,
audio visual equipment, online index.

82 acres, 28 buildings; large waterfront

FacilitiesThe Mariners Memorial Chapel is a National
Memorial honoring men of the Merchant
Marine who gave their lives at sea during World
Wars I and II in the defense of their country.
The American Merchant Marine Museum
preserves displays and interprets historic
artifacts and artwork related to the United States
Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Merchant
Marine, and the profession of seafaring.

AccommodationStudents can be accommodated on campus or in
hostels or in rental apartment.

Fees and fundingInexpensive tuition ($1,107 USD, same for instate and out-of-state students)
Relatively low percent of freshmen receive
grants (16%)
Students are responsible for personal fees,
activity fees, cost of transportation and
prescribed personal computer. Given the fact
that the university is a state university,
students have the right to financial support
from the university.

RequirementsIn addition to requiring strong GPA and SAT/ACT scores, to be
eligible to enter the Academy a candidate must:
Be of good moral character.
Be at least 17 years of age and must not have passed his or
her 25th birthday before July 1 in the year of entrance.
Be a citizen of the United States either by birth or
naturalization, except for a limited number of international
midshipmen specially authorized by Congress.
Meet the physical, security and character requirements
necessary for appointment as Midshipman in the U.S. Naval
Reserve.
Obtain a Congressional nomination to the Academy from a
Member of Congress.
Submit a completed application; and
Qualify scholastically.

Medical/Physical Clearance – Candidates arerequired to pass a DoDMERB (Department of
Defense Medical Examination Review Board)
physical, and take the Candidate Fitness
Assessment (CFA) to assess physical fitness.
Security Clearance – In order to receive a
commission at graduation as an officer in the
U.S. Armed Forces, candidates are required to
complete a security clearance upon enrollment
at the Academy.
