2. What is Demodex?

• The Demodex mite: 8legged ectoparasite
residing in hair follicles
& sebaceous glands
• 65 Demodex Species
Only Demodex
brevis & Demodex
folliculorum are found
on humans

3. Demodex Brevis

• Adult D. brevis mites
are 0.2 mm long and
live inside the lash’s
Sebaceous glands &
Meibomian glands
• D. brevis can be
associated with
meibomian gland
disease

4. Demodex Folliculorum

• 0.4 mm in length
(More slender,
tapered body
than D. brevis)
• Lives within hair
follicles on human
skin, feeding on
dead skin cells

6. Life Cycle, Survival of Demodex

• Life cycle: 2 to 3 weeks
• Females lay 15 - 20 eggs inside hair
follicles near Sebaceous glands
• Adult males leave follicles for mating
• Female mites remain in follicles
• Capable of walking approximately 10
mm/h & more active at night

• Benzyl Benzoate

• Salicylic Acid
• Selenium Sulfide
•Sulfur soap
• For D. folliculorum on the eyelashes; use a
medicated ointment which helps trap mites &
prevents them from laying eggs
