But this year, something is very wrong…
Decorations have been torn down.
Treats have been stolen from the food
stalls.
The famous pumpkin display has been
smashed to pieces.

By day I’m hidden, quiet and still,
But at night I roam the forest and hills.
When the full moon rises, I howl with might,
Half-man, half-beast, I prowl the night.

I don’t really enjoy Halloween, so I wasn’t
dressed up like the others. Monika kept
trying to give me a costume earlier, but I
said no – I was only there to help with the
fortune-telling tent, not to mess around. I
stayed at the tent most of the evening,
sorting cards and trying to entertain the
children. I saw Jade rush past at one
point, looking like she was in a hurry, but I
didn’t stop her. I didn’t see any phantom
myself, and honestly, I wouldn’t be
surprised if it was just another silly prank.

guilty?

I spent the evening at the costume stall,
helping children choose outfits and
accessories. I did try to convince Jonas
to wear something, but he refused and
looked in such a bad mood. While I was
tidying up, I noticed that some of the
white sheets we use for ghost costumes
were missing, but I didn’t think much of it
at the time – it gets so busy! I also saw
Sebb walk past all dressed up, heading
towards the scary movie stage. Apart
from that, I didn’t really see anyone else
except Aidan. His mummy costume
looked fantastic!

I was at the face-painting stall and it was
completely chaotic! I was so stressed
because there were so many children
waiting. In the middle of everything, I had
to help Sebb paint his face green for his
Frankenstein costume – it took ages
which stressed me out more! While I was
working I heard people screaming about
some missing treats from the food stalls
but I didn’t have time to ask what was
happening. I was too busy with the paints
and brushes to look around.

I just love Halloween! I’d prefer not to be
working so I could enjoy it all. I got a
great toffee apple before work at the
treat stall – it was delicious! Then I had
to get my face painted by Betsy. She
looked really stressed and hardly said a
word to me. After that, I started walking
towards the scary movie area. I didn’t
notice anything unusual and I definitely
didn’t see a phantom but I wouldn’t be
surprised if there was one around! The
only strange thing was Jade running past
me in her vampire cloak – she looked like
something was wrong. That caught my
attention, but otherwise, everything
seemed normal.

I spent most of the night inside the
haunted house, making sure people didn’t
get too scared. It was so dark in there, I
could hardly see anything. I did pass
Monika earlier and she looked great in
her witch costume. She told me Jonas
was in a terrible mood and hadn’t
dressed up at all, which surprised me –
who doesn’t wear a costume to the
Halloween festival? Apart from that, I
didn’t see much, though I thought I heard
some shouting outside.

I was helping with the spooky disco,
making sure the music and lights worked.
At one point the speakers broke, so I had
to run across to the scary movie area to
get a replacement. I was looking for Sebb
to help me but he wasn’t there. On my
way back, I noticed the pumpkin display
has been smashed – pumpkins were
everywhere! Near the mess, I spotted a
white sheet thrown on the ground with
green paint all over it. I didn’t think much
of it then, but now hearing about all this
phantom stuff, it seems a bit suspicious.

25.
Go BackJonas is… NOT guilty!
Jonas isn’t guilty. Even though he was
grumpy and refused to wear a
costume, he spent the whole evening
at the fortune-telling tent. His bad
mood doesn’t mean he caused trouble
– he simply doesn’t like Halloween.
26.
Go BackMonika is… NOT guilty!
Monika isn’t guilty. She was busy at
the costume stall all night. It’s true she
noticed some white sheets missing
but she didn’t take them. She was only
helping people find costumes.
27.
Go BackBetsy is… NOT guilty!
Betsy isn’t guilty. Maybe she was
acting a bit strange and unusual but
only because she was stuck at the
face-painting stall, stressed with a
long line of children.
28.
Go BackSebb is… guilty!
“Alright fine…it was me! I just love
Halloween so much and wanted to make
it spooky and scare people! I thought
dressing as the phantom would be fun,
but I went too far.”
He pretended nothing unusual happened
and tried to say he saw other people acting
strangely. However, he was the only one
with green paint on him from his
Frankenstein costume – the same green
paint that was found on the phantom’s
white sheet. He was near the food stalls
after the treats disappeared, and he wasn’t
at the scary movie tent when he should
have been. Sebb is behind the festival
chaos.
Discussion Questions
29.
Go BackAidan is… NOT guilty!
Aidan isn’t guilty. He worked inside the
haunted house where it was dark and
noisy, so most people didn’t see him
and he couldn’t see much either. He
was surprised Jonas didn’t wear a
costume, but that was all he noticed.
30.
Go BackJade is… NOT guilty!
Jade isn’t guilty. She was running
around in a hurry and stressed, but
only because the speaker had broken
and she needed a new one. She was
also near the smashed pumpkins and
the white sheet on the ground, but she
wasn’t there when it happened.
