3. What is Berner-Garde?
BGF was established to collect, maintain and disseminateinformation about genetic diseases observed in the Bernese
Mountain Dog.
It is comprised of a voluntary Board of Directors, several committees
and a computerized database.
The database contains information from voluntary submissions of
data from owners and other public sources of information, including
the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).
Information BGF database is available to all owners, Bernese
Mountain Dog clubs, both national and international, veterinarians,
researchers and other appropriate users who are working to reduce
genetic disease in the BMD.

Tissue Repository housed at Michigan
State University.

Working with researchers to provide
information that will assist them in their
efforts.

Dedicated to improving the lifespan of ourbeloved Berners
Staffed completely by volunteers
Depends completely on donations to fund
the database and DNA Repository

Berner-Garde was a vision of Martin andBarbara Packard in the late 70s
Martin created PC database in 80s
Berner-Garde Foundation incorporated
1995 as a non-profit organization
The Berner-Garde database went live on
the internet on February 22, 2004

• Berner-Garde received a database from the Dutchclub, VBSH.
• The database (called Animal Stackers) was privately
maintained by a club member.
• Since they no longer maintain it, they asked the dogs
be added to Berner-Garde.
• It contains 106,789 Berners, but it is not known how
many of those may already be in Berner-Garde at this
time?
• Gary will work on the data as time permits
