THE MAIN POINTS OF HIS BIOGRAPHY

2. Einstein’s childhood

EINSTEIN’S CHILDHOOD
• He was born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm and then his family
moved to Munich.
• He couldn’t speak until he was six years old.
• He’s father was a businessman and his mother was a
housewife.

3. Einstein at school

EINSTEIN AT SCHOOL
• He studied well at Munich Primary
School.
• Then he studied at Luitpold
Gymnasium where he often argued
with the teachers that’s why they
belittled his success.
• He was good at Math, but bad at
Botany and French.

4. Einstein at the university 1896 - 1901

EINSTEIN AT THE UNIVERSITY
1896 - 1901
• He didn’t get into university on his first try, failing the
French entrance exam.
• He studied for another year at Old Cantonal School
Aarau.
• He successfully enrolled Zurich Polytechnic on the
second attempt.
• He often skipped lectures and even got reprimands. He
focused on independent study of Physics.

5. Einstein’s acquaintances

EINSTEIN’S ACQUAINTANCES
Mileva Maric
Marcel Grossmann
Michele Besso

6. Einstein after the university

EINSTEIN AFTER THE UNIVERSITY
• After graduation from Zurich Polytechnic the teachers
didn’t offer him a job that’s why he was left with nothing.
• His friend Marcel Grossmann helped him find a job.
• He got a job at the patent office.
• In 1903 he married Mileva Maric.
• Working at the patent office, he begins to develop the
foundations of his future articles. His close friend Michele
Besso was very helpful with the ideological component of
the articles.

7. “Annus mirabilis” 1905

“ANNUS MIRABILIS”
1905
• In 1905 he published four articles:
1. The first article explained the photoelectric effect by
determining the energy of a light quantum.
2. The second article explained Brownian motion, established
Einstein’s relation, and forced reluctant physicists to accept the
existence of atoms.
3. The third article presented Einstein's special theory of
relativity, which established a universal constant speed of light for
all reference frames and theories of space-time.
4. The fourth article, a consequence of the special theory of
relativity, developed the principle of the equivalence of mass and
energy, which led to the discovery and use of atomic energy.

8. General theory of relativity 1915

GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY
1915
• On November 15th, 1915 he presented his general
theory of relativity at the Prussian Academy of Science.
• The theory has been developed by him for 8 years.
• In his theory he postulated that gravitational and
inertial forces have the same nature.
• According to him, gravitational effects are caused
not by the forceful interaction of bodies and fields in
space-time but by the deformation of space-time itself
which is associated, in particular, with the presence of
mass-energy.
• General theory of relativity is the best theory
currently available to explain the nature of gravity.

9. Proof to the royal society 1919

PROOF TO THE ROYAL SOCIETY
1919
• On November 6, 1919, the British
astronomer Arthur Eddington delivered a
report at a joint meeting of the Royal
Society and the Royal Astronomical Society.
• The observations of the solar eclipse by the
expedition confirmed the predictions of
general relativity.
• The President of the Royal Society then
called the theory of relativity one of the
greatest achievements of thought. The event
became a scientific sensation and made
Einstein world-famous.
• Later, in 1925, Einstein would be awarded
the Copley Medal.

10. Nobel prize 1921

NOBEL PRIZE
1921
• In 1921 he received the Nobel Prize for
his explanation of photoelectric effect.
• Everyone
knew
that
his
real
achievement was the theory of relativity.
• Many scientists of that time opposed his
discoveries.
• He gave all the prize money to his first
wife.

11. Quantum mechanics

QUANTUM MECHANICS
• He made a huge contribution to
quantum mechanics:
1. As mentioned earlier, he explained the
photoelectric effect.
2. He generalized the quantum statistics
proposed by Satyendra Nath Bose for
describing photons. In his way, he created
Bose-Einstein statistics.
3. However, he had problems with
quantum mechanics because it violated his
principle of the constancy of the speed light.

12. Einstein’s Last years

EINSTEIN’S LAST YEARS
• The last years of his life were devoted to scientific
activities, personal life and social activities.
• He lived in the USA, in Princeton (New Jersey).
• Einstein was an interesting man: he didn’t like
wearing socks, but he never gave up his favorite
sweater.
• He liked walking, playing the violin and sailing.
• He was married twice, the second time to his
cousin Elsa Einstein.

13. Einstein’s Death April 18th, 1955

EINSTEIN’S DEATH
TH
APRIL 18 , 1955
• Albert Einstein died on April 18th,
1955, at the age of 76, due to an
aortic aneurysm.
• Only 12 close friends attended his
funeral.
• Einstein’s body was cremated and
his ashes were scattered in the
wind.
