What is reproduction?

8.

Lesson 3: Reproduction in flowering plants
Learning aims:
Name the stages in the life cycle of
a flowering plant.
Describe the processes of pollination.

9.

Getting started
Why do you think flowers are different colours?
Which parts of a flower make pollen?
Why do you think flowers need pollen?

10.

11.

How does a plant change?
In pairs, discuss how a plant changes as it grows.
Use these words:
• flower
• adult plant
• seed
• fruit with seeds
• seedling

12.

How does a plant change?
1. Plant produces flower.

2. Flower dies and fall of.
3. Fruit grows.
4. Seeds form inside the fruit.

5. Seeds grow into new plants.

13.

What is a plant’s life cycle?
All changes in a flowering plant, from flowers to seeds growing
into a new plants, are called the plant ’s life cycle .

14.

Pollination
Pollination is the movement of pollen from the stamen of a
flower to the stigma of the same kind of flower.

15.

Pollination
Pollination by insects
• Insects feed on nectar.
• They collect pollen.
• Pollen is moved to the stigma of
another flower.
Pollination by wind
• Wind blows the pollen from the
anther to the stigma of other
flowers.

16.

Which of the following plants are adapted for
insect pollination and which for wind pollination?

19.

Homework check
• A - male flower, it has stamens with anthers.
• B - female flower, it has a carpel with a stigma, style, and
ovary.

Lesson 4: Reproduction in flowering plants
Learning aims:
Describe the processes of fertilisation, fruit
and seed production.

23.

Vocabulary

24.

Fertilisation
Fertilisation is when pollen and egg join to make seeds.
It happens if the pollen and egg are from the same kind of flower.

30.

Seed dispersal
Seed dispersal is a process when plants spread their seeds away
from themselves.

31.

Methods of seed dispersal
Wind
• Seeds are light, often with wings or hair.
• Wind carry them away from the parent plant.
Water
• Fruits have a spongy covering.
• It helps to float on water, allowing
them to travel across water.
Animals
• Fruits are colourful, soft, and juicy.
• Seeds disperse in the animal’s droppings.
• Fruits have spines and hooks.
• Seeds stick to fur, feathers, or clothing and are
carried to new locations.
Explosion
• Some plants explode when dry out
and split open.
Drop and roll
• Fruits are heavy and round. They roll along the ground.

32.

Explosion
Watch a video how explosion happens in plants.

33.

Sort the plants below by their seed dispersal method.

34.

Wrap-up

plant. Write in your copybook.

44.

Some animal attracted to fruits by their colour,
smell, and taste. Animals eat them. Seeds
disperse in the animal’s droppings.

45.

Seed must be dispersed because plants cannot walk around
and take their seeds to other places.
If seeds do not spread, then overcrowding will happen.

46.

Watch the video.
Try to predict the topic of today's lesson.

Seed germination
Grade 5
Quantum TECH School

49.

Lesson 4: Seed germination
Learning aims:
Find out what seed germination is
Identify the conditions that seeds
need to germinate

50.

Germination
Germination is a process when a seed starts to grow or
germinates.

51.

Germination
Seed uses its food store to give its energy to grow.

52.

When does germination start?
When there are right conditions:
water
warm
temperature
air

53.

Germination starts when seed absorbs water.

54.

Activity: Observe a seed
Procedure
1. Write your name and today’s date on the cup with a marker.
2. Put a small amount of cotton wool into the bottom of the cup.
3. Place the bean seed gently on top of the cotton wool.
4. Add a little water with a pipette to make the cotton wool damp (not too wet).
5. Place some more cotton wool lightly over the seed.
6. Put your cup near sunlight.
7. Check the seed every day and add a little water if the cotton is dry.
8. Draw or write what you see happening to the seed each day.

55.

Activity: Observe a seed
You will need:
• bean seeds
• cotton wool
• plastic cup
• pipette
• water
• marker

56.

Questions
1 Why do seeds need to absorb water?
2a Which part of the new bean plant grows first?
b Suggest a reason why this part grows downwards.
3a In which direction does the first shoot grow?
b Suggest a reason why this part grows in this direction.
4 Why do you think the new leaves start to grow above the ground?
5 Why do you think the seed shrivels and becomes small after germination?
