MUSSORGSKY & CULTURAL DIPLOMACY
How one composer's music became Russia's most effective soft power tool
BEYOND IDEOLOGY

CULTURAL BRIDGE
Impossible to co-opt
A benchmark for
masters
Adopted by other
cultures
Unlike Gorky or
Shostakovich, Mussorgsky
left no political statements.
His music carries no regime
— making it trusted across
Cold War divides.
Staging Boris Godunov or
performing Pictures at an
Exhibition is a mark of
world-class artistry — in
Tokyo, Berlin, Buenos Aires
alike.
French, Czech, Japanese
and British artists
reimagined his work as
their own — creating
dialogue without the feel
of cultural expansion.
