1. Reported Speech

2. What is Reported Speech?

-Reported speech tells what someone
said.
-It is also called indirect speech.
-We don’t use quotation marks.
Example:
Direct: She said, “I am happy.”
Reported: She said that she was happy.

3. Direct vs Reported Speech

Direct Speech
Reported Speech
“I like coffee.
”He said he liked coffee.
“I am working.
”She said she was working.
Direct = exact words
Reported = meaning

4. Tense Changes

Present simple → Past simple
Present continuous → Past continuous
Will → Would
Can → Could
Examples:
“I play.” → He said he played.
“I will go.” → He said he would go.

5. Pronoun Changes

Pronouns change depending on the
speaker.
Example:
“I am tired.” → She said she was
tired.
“We are ready.” → They said they
were ready.

6. Time & Place Changes

Time & Place Changes
now
→ then
today → that day
tomorrow → the next day
here
→ there
Example:
“I will come tomorrow.” → He said he
would come the next day.

7. Reporting Verbs

say / said
tell / told
Rule:
Say → no object
Tell → needs object
Examples:
He said he was tired.
He told me he was tired.

8. Statements in Reported Speech Structure:

Subject + said/told + that +
sentence
Examples:
She said that she loved music.
He told me that he was busy

9. Practice Examples

Change into reported speech:
“I don’t like sport.”
“I am writing a story.”
“The photos look amazing.”
Answers:
He said he didn’t like sport.
She said she was writing a story.
She said the photos looked amazing.

10. Homework

Write 5 sentences in direct
speech.
Change them into reported
speech.
