Chapter 2: What do the boys need?Explanation
Recap:
A plane crash has left a group of schoolboys stranded on an
uninhabited island. They now have to fend for themselves.
They have limited resources so they will have to decide on their
priorities.
First they have to decide what they need.
Discuss: from the following list, what do the boys most need
and why?
shelter, a plan for being rescued, warmth, food to eat, meat to
eat, safety

Izzy
They need shelter to feel
warm and safe. They don’t
need to look for food - there is
plenty of fruit.
Without food they will die.
Being rescued will be a
matter of luck, so not
something they can plan.

Chapter 2: What do the boys need?Explanation
Read Chapter 2 of ‘Lord of the Flies’
You need a copy of the ‘Lord of the Flies’ for this lesson. Please ensure
that you are using the Faber & Faber; Main edition (3 Mar. 1997). Chapter
2 starts on page 30 and ends on page 47.
As you read consider the following:
● Are the boys successful in meeting their basic needs? Why/why not?
● Would you say the boys achieve anything in this chapter? Why/why
not?

Chapter 2: What do the boys need?Check
Which of the following things did not happen in Chapter 2?
a
The boys decide that whoever is holding the conch has the right to
speak in meetings.
b
The boys light a fire that destroys a lot of the forest.
c

one who rescues them.
d
It is Ralph who says this.
The “littluns” say that there is a beast like a snake in the forest.

Task AChapter 2: What do the boys need?
Feedback
You might have said:
1. The boys attempt to build a functioning society by holding a meeting and
deciding that they will use the conch as a way of managing their
debates. They build a fire inspired by the idea that the smoke will
attract the attention of a rescue ship.
2. The boys’ attempts are thwarted by the fact they don’t know enough to
think things through. So, they build a fire that burns out too soon and
damages the island. Also, their carelessness leads to the (we presume)
death of the boy with the “mulberry” mark.

Chapter 2: Nobody listens to Piggy
14.
Chapter 2: Nobody listens to PiggyExplanation
Like you, Izzy read Chapter 2 and this is what
she thought:
For me the most interesting part of this chapter
is the role of Piggy. I think Piggy is the most
mature, wise and sensible of the boys on the
island. I think we should reflect on why they
won’t listen to him.
Discuss: find evidence from Chapter 2 to support Izzy’s points
that Piggy is mature, wise and sensible but the others won’t
listen to him.
15.
Chapter 2: Nobody listens to PiggyExplanation
You might have said:
Mature, wise and sensible:
He understands the seriousness of their situation and explains that nobody
knows they are on the island. He carefully listens to the little boy’s fears
and interprets them to the others. He thinks the others behave like “kids”
when they get excited about the fire. He says they should build “shelters.”
Why the others won’t listen to him:
He can’t always make himself understood. He explains that no-one knows
where they are and then he “swayed” and had to sit down. Mostly though,
his good sense is less forceful than the impulsive behaviour.
16.
Chapter 2: Nobody listens to PiggyCheck
Which of the following words supports the idea that although Piggy
has many strengths, he is weaker than the others?
a
“kids”
b
“swayed”
c
“shelter”
d
“interprets”
This word implies that he
is about to faint and
contributes to the idea
that he is weak.

Task BChapter 2: Nobody listens to Piggy
Practice
Discuss: what do you think Golding wants us
to learn from the character of Piggy?
You might consider:
● his wisdom and common sense
● his physical weaknesses
● the qualities and events that appeal to the other boys

yours?
Izzy
Golding thinks that intelligence should be
listened to, but that most people can’t stop
themselves from acting impulsively and that
leads to danger.
Golding shows us that Piggy has many of the qualities
of a good wise leader, but the boys would never have
elected him because he seems too weak to be a
leader.
