Check climate and controller
Check - carefully
How is the temperature - in stable?
How is the climate - feeling?
Are the inlets open - according to the climate and temperature?
Are the outlets running - according to the climate and temperature?
Is the artificial heat supply working - according to the climate and
temperature?
What is the temperature/humidity - on the controller?
How do the pigs behaviour?
Building the future
Laying in the resting area - normal
Laying in a pyramid – too cold
Laying in the dunging area – too hot
Laying all over – too hot
React - on mistakes

The day before expected farrowing
Building the future
Switch on the heating lamp
Adjust the farrowing crates – close in for sows
Close of the hole in slats - by the back gate of pen
Decrease the feed ration – adjust the dozer to 2.5 FU per day
Count the number of usable tits – record the animals with less than 12 usable
tits, photograph of sows tits and ear number (ID) for later claim

Daily routines - farrowingDanish Farm Design
Birth management – sow
Record the farrowing step by step during the process – post it
Time for starting – time for incidences
Number of piglets – alive and stillborn
Check the sow every half hour
Maximum 30 minutes between born piglets – help if needed
Sows which are pressing without delivering - must be helped
Have extra focus - on big litters and the last part of the farrowing
Checking sows
With gloves and gel – use enough gel
Leave the gloves on the pen side - until farrowing has finished
Leave the stillborn behind the pen - until farrowing has finished
Finish farrowing
When placenta is delivered
Inject the sow by 2 ml. oxytocin – penicillin for problem sows

Daily routines - farrowingDanish Farm Design
Birth management – litter/piglets
During farrowing
Building the future
Ensure to dry the piglets – in the creep area or/and with saw dust
Ensure to heat up weak and small piglets – in creep area or in hot bath –
proximally 40 degree (swim west)
Ensure access to colostrums for all – especially the smallest and weakest
Close in the big (dry) piglets a couple of hours – let the smallest get free
access to the tits
Help the smallest to the udder

Cut tails, umbilical cord (string) – only cut dry strings
Injection of all piglets – by 0.5 ml. Amoxicillin
Count the number of piglets – live and stillborn
Record the result - on sow sheets and in the notebook
Ear notching breeding piglets – pure bred and cross bred
Hang on a green clothe pen – later castration
Evaluate the sow – what piglets to be given?
1. parity for biggest piglets – note the conclusion in the notebook
2.-3. parity for smallest – note the conclusion in the notebook
Multi suckling
Let out the smallest piglets for suckling
Keep the biggest inside the creep area for 1 – 2 hours

Use pre starter – optimized for the smallest piglets, 6 – 9 kg.
Feed many times per day – minimum three
Feed according to the piglets appetite
Give small amount

Daily routines - litter equalisation (1)Danish Farm Design
Must be done during the first 24 hours after farrowing (group)
Building the future
Ensure the supply of colostrums - for all piglets before equalisation
Find the optimal sow for different size of piglets
1. parity sows
- Biggest piglets
2 & 3 parity sows - Smallest piglets (size of piglets and tits)
Other sows
- Middle size piglets
Litter equalisation
Must be done twice a day
Morning and evening

Daily routines - litter equalisation (2)Danish Farm Design
Recorded sows are calculated - average of live born
Bring the smallest piglets to the selected sows – average number
Bring the biggest piglets to the selected sows - average number
Divide the rest of piglets - in between rest of the sows
Do the mixing with focus on minimal mixing of piglets
Building the future
Dam shall keep as many of their own piglets as possible
The new group is now equalised
Check the result/status - of last farrowing group
Fill up new litters - with piglets from earlier group
The last group must be completed - with 12 – 13 piglets/litter (100%
1.st parity 13 -14)

Daily routines – nurse sows for newborn (1)Danish Farm Design
If the last (earlier) group of sows still have too many piglets
Building the future
More than 12 – 13 in average (100% 1.st parity, 13 -14)
Evaluate and calculate the needs of nursing sows – numbers
Select the best “Nurse A” sow – 1. parity, having three weeks old and strong
piglets
Wean the “Nurse A” sow – leave her without piglets for 1-2 hours
Optimal time for weaning is around one hour before feeding
Select the “Nurse B” sow – good milking sow with piglets 5 till 7 days old (big
and strong)
Bring the piglets from “Nurse B” to a neutral zone (Wagon) - leave her without
piglets 1-2 hours
Keep the piglets heated up in wagons
Runts from older litters can be transferred to “Nurse B” sow to fill up the litter
and safe runts

Transfer the piglets - from the “nurse B” sow to the “nurse A” sow
Optimal time is around half an hour after feeding
Inject the receiver - with 2 ml. oxytocin
Surveillance of the litter – accepted by the sow or not?
Offer medicated water if needed
Select good newborn piglets (older than 24 hours)
A complete litter - or from different litters
Bring the selected litter/piglets to the “nurse B” sow
Optimal time is around half an hour after feeding
Inject the sow - with 2 ml. oxytocin
Surveillance of the litter – accepted by the sow or not?
Offer medicated water if needed

Building the future

Daily routines – Castration and IronDanish Farm Design
Castration of piglets from 3 – 5 days old
Find the litters for castration in the notebook - farrowing
Search for green clothe pens – in stable
Start castration of the oldest – nearest five days limit
Check the size of piglets in the litter – ready or not?
Postpone litters with heavily diarrhoea
Bring all needed tools with you
medicine, Iron, syringes and marking pens/spray
Use the week colour – Treat/mark animals found sick
Actions
Castration – be aware not to castrate piglets with hernia and defects
Iron – Injection in neck by 200 mg. active product + 20 percent extra
20% product – use 1.2 ml. (200 mg. x 1.2 = 240 mg)
10% product – use 2.4 ml. (100 mg. x 2.4 = 240 mg)
Remove the green clothe pen when all piglets are completed
Leave the green clothe pen if non castrated piglets are present in the pen
