The Battle of Hastings1
It was the year 1066. The Normans wanted to fight against the English.
The armies met at Hastings. The English already waited for them on the top of the hill.
The battle started at nine o´clock. The Normans were much stronger because they fought on horses
and they had soldiers with bows and arrows. The English had only battleaxes and had to fight on
foot. A lot of their soldiers were farmers. Their weapons were pitchforks and stones. Again and
again the Normans ran uphill, but the English stopped them. Suddenly the Normans moved back.
The English followed them . This was a mistake because the Normans were all around the English
and started to kill them.
Late in the afternoon, the Normans killed the English King Harold. When Herold´s men heared of
their king´s death, they ran away. The battle was over. Now, William of Normandy was King of
England. Today we know him as William, the Conquerer.
