D. I. Mendeleev was born on February 8, 1834, in
Tobolsk, in the family of the director of the Tobolsk
gymnasium

He received his higher
education at the Main
Pedagogical Institute in St.
Petersburg.
He graduated in 1855 with a
gold medal, receiving a
diploma as a senior teacher.

In 1869, Mendeleev created the periodic table of
chemical elements, which later became the basis of
atomic and molecular theory.
In 1861, he published the first Russian textbook on
organic chemistry, for which he was awarded the
Demidov Prize of the St. Petersburg Academy of
Sciences.

He died of
pneumonia on
January 20, 1907,
in St. Petersburg,
and was buried at
the Volkovsky
Cemetery.
