• The dollar is the official currency of the
United States of America. It is the most traded
currency in the world, followed by the euro and
the Japanese yen.

• The first paper money in the United States
appeared in 1690 in Massachusetts for
military purposes, and the first official
state coins began to be made in 1794 at the
Philadelphia Mint, after Congress approved
the dollar as currency in 1785.

• Every day, the United States issues approximately
35 million banknotes of various denominations,
totaling approximately $635 million. Ninety-five
percent of the banknotes printed annually are used
to replace worn-out currency. In 2005, the cost of
producing one banknote was approximately 5.7
cents.
