Initially inspired by the Gordon Bennet-style races(founded to inspire competition in the industry), this still
novel idea completely captivated the primarily French
audience, with petrol filling their noses all around. 12

Racers would take off at 90-second intervals, and the
race was essentially a time trial.

he would have won if he hadn't been asked to slow down and give up his position: Schumacher was
the team's favorite. The audience was not pleased, and they booed the driver during the awards
ceremony. Schumacher tried to smooth things over by placing Rubens on the podium next to him, but
this did not help to calm the crowd's outrage.
