Jeffrey Moeller:
I’m here in Changsha, capital of central China’s Hunan Province, a city that has
long been praised for being China’s capital of engineering machinery, because
actually a lot of the country’s top manufacturers are headquartered here. But
now it’s transforming into the nation’s leading intelligent manufacturing center.
Today I want to take you to some of Changsha’s most innovative companies to
see how they are using intelligent manufacturing to help upgrade some of the
traditional industries.
Our first stop in Changsha is an environmental equipment producer who
developed the world’s first 5G sanitation robots. The robot cluster can switch
between unmanned and manned modes and can automatically detect and
trace garbage, sweep and wash the road, as well as collect and transport
garbage.

Zhang Bin:
Based on 5G plus AI, faster remote operation of the sanitation robot cluster
can be achieved. We provide the sanitation robots as well as the intelligent
sanitation service system solution to help build a national intelligent city system.
Jeffrey Moeller:
Our next stop is a company committed to the research and development,
manufacturing, and service of smart energy (smart energy meters), including
electricity, water, gas, and heat, as well as the development of smart cities and
smart power distribution products and solutions. One of its current efforts to
follow the trend of Industry 4.0 is to upgrade its production facility to a digital
factory with full information system coverage and a high level of production
technology and automation.

Industry 4.0 is giving us the chance to acquire new technology for
manufacturing. Look at this. This is the second generation of our smart meter
manufacturing line, which is 100% automatic. You can see all the machines are
automatic. Also, we have robots that can help us to reduce costs but, more
importantly, they can improve the quality control. This means that we can offer
our customers products that are high quality, have a low cost, and comply with
their requirements 100%.

Now one very hot topic is China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Every country, and
every market is looking for smart solutions. This will bring big opportunities to
China as well as all the partner countries in the field of joint infrastructure
development. The development of infrastructure is a strong foundation on
which the countries can develop their economies.

Changsha sees upgrading the manufacturing sector as the key to driving highquality development. The city authorities have taken measures to encourage
traditional manufacturers to use new technologies. For instance, the
government and industry leaders co-founded institutes providing smaller
manufacturers with services that facilitate industrial upgrade, such as
consultancy and technology development. Policy support has also been stepped
up, such as granting bonuses to manufacturers purchasing intelligent
equipment. We then made a visit to a company dedicated to the development,
manufacturing, sales, and service of aerial work platforms.

Zhou Li:
Changsha is itself developing in a more intelligent way, and our company is also
developing itself with intelligent manufacturing. We have intelligent assembly
lines in the workshop, and because of the intelligent workshops, our daily
production has tripled, our workers are more efficient and more skilled, and
the quality of our products has improved compared to products produced in the
traditional way. This is all thanks to the intelligent assembly lines. Because of
technologies like this, a lot of foreigners know more about Chinese
manufacturers. They know more about the development of China. Today,
“Made in China” means smarter and more intelligent.

Intelligent manufacturing is poised to reshape the manufacturing sector, and
Changsha is seizing the opportunity to extend its advantages in the future. At
the end of the day, it’s about leveraging innovative technologies to enhance
production efficiency and free up labor from repetitive work. With intelligent
manufacturing, “Made in China” will be smarter than ever.
