What is Lake
Baikal?
• Baikal is the deepest lake on
Earth and the largest freshwater
lake by volume.
• Located in Eastern Siberia,
Russia.
• Estimated to be 25-30 million
years old.
• Designated as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.

Why is Baikal
Unique?
•Depth: Maximum depth of 1,642 meters (5,387
feet).
•Water: Holds approximately 20% of the world’s
unfrozen fresh water.
•Ecosystem: Unique and diverse flora and fauna,
with many endemic species (found nowhere else).
•Ice: In winter, Baikal freezes over, creating
incredible ice formations with cracks and bubbles.

• Baikal Seal (Nerpa) – the world’s only
freshwater seal.
• Omul - a valuable commercial fish.
• Over 2,600 species of animals and plants,
many endemic.
• Diverse algae, fish, and invertebrate species.

Lake Baikal
• Olkhon Island: The largest island on Baikal, a sacred place
for Buryat people.
• Circum-Baikal Railway (CBR): A unique engineering
monument running along the lake shore.
• Listvyanka: A popular village on the shore of Baikal with a
Lake Baikal Museum.
• Activities: Hiking, boating, fishing, winter sports (skating,
skiing, ice fishing).
