The Merchant's wife at Tea

is one of my favourite canvases, painted by the Russian
artist Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev in 1918.
In the picture we can see a merchant’s wife, a young
woman, sitting on the terrace of her mansion (особняк).
She is elegantly holding a porcelain saucer(фарфоровое
блюдце) in one hand and is decorously(чинно) drinking tea
from it. The merchant's wife is unusually beautiful and
embodies(воплощает) the Russian ideal: pink lips, a
straight nose, black brows, sky-blue(небесно голубые)
eyes. Her pale(бледная) soft skin, curvy(пышная) figure
and rosy cheeks give her a healthy appearance. She is
wearing an expensive purple velvet dress with
lace(кружева) and a bow, a purple scarf on her head.
Looking at her face I can say that she is a happy, kind, wise,
confident woman. I think the merchant’s life is a success.
The table is filled with delicious fruits and sweets for tea
drinking: cookies and cupcakes, a bunch of grapes, apples
and a juicy red watermelon. Near the merchant's wife there
is a loving cat.
I like this picture because it is colorful and well shows
Russian merchant life.
