► All children in the UK are required by law to
receive full-time education. Education in
England, Scotland and Wales is now
compulsory for all children aged 5 to 16.
► After the age of 16,when education is no
longer compulsory, young people have a
range of choices.

► About 70 % continue education , others go
to work.
► New measures of the government are:
► 1.to reduce infant class sizes;
► 2.tp raise standards in schools and
education authorities;
► 3.to enhance the status and quality of
teachin profession and others.

► The 1870 Parliamentary Act established
elementary schools.
► The 1944 Education Act introduced free
compulsory secondary education.

6. 11+

► The decision was made on the results
obtained in the “11+” examination, taken
on leaving primary school.

► 1.Comprehensive schools were introduced
in 1965.They are most popular type of
schools because they provide education for
children from all strata.
► 2.Grammar schools offer a mainly academic
education for the 11 to 18 year group.

► 3.Secondary modern schools which provide
a more general and technical education for
children aged 11-16.
► 4. Non-fee-paying independent schools are
set up by the government with the help of
business sponsor and give boys and girls a
broad secondary education with a strong
technological and business slant.

► 5. Specialist schools which give pupils a
broad secondary education with a strong
emphasis on technology.
► The national Curriculum 1998 determines
the subjects taught to children. It ensures
that pupils study a balanced range of
subjects.

► From 14 onwards children in secondary
schools spend time preparing for the public
examination, which marks the end of the
compulsory academic career at 16.Pupils
may stay on at school until they are 18.

11. GCSE

► THE MAIN SCHOOL EXAMINATION in
England, Wales and Northern Ireland is
called General Certificate of Secondary
Educaton.

► All state schools have to give parents a
written annual report on their child’s
achievements containing details about
progress on all subjects and activities,
attendance record, results of National
Curriculum Assessment.

13. 3 functions of the National Curriculum Assessment

1. To inform the government whether pupils are
developing skills they will need as adults
2. To assess the performance of schools and teachers in
helping children to learn
3. To identify particular strengths and weakness in
individual pupils.

giving their pupils` self-confidence, the right
accent, a good academic background.

16. Higher Education

• consists of degree
courses, or their
equivalent, usually given
at a university
• There are at present 88
universities in the UK
• Oxbridge is one of the
largest in the UK with over
30 colleges scattered all
over London and the
Home Counties.

which award degrees.
► Degree is an academic title granted by a
university to a student who completed a
given course.

► Bachelor’s degree-a university degree
signifying completion of the undergraduate
curriculum and graduation.
► Master’s degree- a degree signifying
completion of at least 1 year of prescribed
study beyond the bachelor’s degree.

►The oldest universities are Oxford and
Cambridge, which were founded in
1167 and 1209.
►St.Andrew`s University of Scotland was
founded in 1411,the University of
Wales in 1893.

► Oxford and Cambridge consist of a number
of colleges which are governed by deans.
► The peculiarity of British universities is that
they are a federation of colleges.
► Colleges of Oxford and Cambridge are
residential institutions.

► In 1971 a new non-residential university
offering degrees and other courses for adult
students of all ages was founded.
► It is called Open university.

► PhD- Doctor of Philosophy.
► In order to get this degree one has to carry
out original research and produce a
