There are 500 thousand Mordvins
living in Russia, most of whom
live in the Republic of Mordovia.
They belong to the Finno-Ugric
peoples, and are divided into two
subethnoses: Moksha and Erzya.
The Mordovian language consists
of two dialects: Moksha and
Erzya. Until the twentieth
century, Mordvins had a custom:
the rst deceased in the new
cemetery was buried standing
and with a sta in his hands. It
was believed that his spirit would
become the "master of the
cemetery."
