ERECTED AND ONE OF THE MAN-MADE WONDERS OF THE
WORLD. IT STANDS IN THE NORTHERN PART OF THE MODERN
PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.
• IT IS A MASSIVE STONE FORTIFICATION. ITS WIDTH IS SIX TO
SEVEN METERS AT THE BASE, AND ABOUT FIVE METERS AT THE
TOP, WHICH IN ANCIENT TIMES ALLOWED YOU TO SAFELY
DRIVE THROUGH SOME AREAS ON HORSEBACK WITH CARTS
• THE TOTAL LENGTH OF ALL FRAGMENTS OF THE GREAT WALL
OF CHINA IS 21,196.18 KILOMETERS.
• THE FIRST SECTIONS OF THE WALL WERE BUILT OF CLAY

THE FORBIDDEN CITY OF SHAOLINIT TOOK 14 YEARS TO BUILD THE FORBIDDEN CITY (FROM 1406 TO 1420).
MORE THAN 1,000,000 WORKERS WERE INVOLVED IN THE CONSTRUCTION, INCLUDING MORE THAN
100,000 ARTISANS.
THE FORBIDDEN CITY SERVED AS THE MAIN RESIDENCE OF THE EMPERORS OF CHINA FOR 492 YEARS
(1420-1912).
IT WAS THE HOME OF 24 EMPERORS: 14 FROM THE MING DYNASTY AND 10 FROM THE QING
DYNASTY.
THE AREA OF THE FORBIDDEN CITY IS 720,000 M2, OF WHICH 150,000 M2 ARE OCCUPIED BY
BUILDINGS.
THE TERRITORY OF THE PALACE COMPLEX CONSISTS OF MORE THAN 70 PALACE BLOCKS: THERE ARE
980 BUILDINGS WITH MORE THAN 8,700 ROOMS.
THE LENGTH OF THE WALLS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH IS 961 M, FROM EAST TO WEST – 753 M.
THE FORBIDDEN CITY (GUGUN) IS SURROUNDED BY A 10-METER WALL 3.4 KM LONG.
A 52-METER-WIDE MOAT WAS DUG AROUND THE PALACE.
GUGUN IS VISITED BY 14 MILLION TOURISTS ANNUALLY, THE MAXIMUM ALLOWED NUMBER OF
PEOPLE PER DAY IS 80,000

Jiuzhaigou• IT IS FAMOUS FOR ITS CRYSTAL CLEAR MULTICOLORED LAKES,
PRISTINE FORESTS, WATERFALLS AND MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES
• IT IS A SEPARATE WORLD WITH UNIQUE FLORA AND FAUNA.
THERE ARE RARE SPECIES OF VARIOUS PLANTS, ABOUT 140
SPECIES OF BIRDS LIVE HERE AND, IF YOU BELIEVE THE CHINESE,
A LARGE PANDA AND A GOLDEN SNUB-NOSED MONKEY LIVE IN
A NATURAL ENVIRONMENT ON THE TERRITORY OF THE PARK
• THERE ARE A TOTAL OF 108 LAKES OF AMAZING BEAUTY IN THE
JIUZHAIGOU VALLEY. ACCORDING TO LEGEND, ONE YOUNG
MAN BROUGHT A MAGIC MIRROR AS A GIFT TO HIS BELOVED.
WHEN THE MIRROR FELL OUT OF HER HANDS, IT SHATTERED
INTO 108 PIECES, WHICH BECAME BEAUTIFUL LAKES. AND
REALLY, WHEN YOU GET TO THIS PARK AND SEE EVERYTHING
WITH YOUR OWN EYES, IT SEEMS THAT THERE IS DEFINITELY
MAGIC INVOLVED.
11.
National Park Longji• LONGJI RICE TERRACES ARE LIKE A BEAUTIFUL NATURAL
PICTURE, VARYING DEPENDING ON THE SEASON. MANMADE "STEP FIELDS" BEND PICTURESQUELY ALONG THE
SLOPES, LIKE LINES OF MYSTERIOUS MANUSCRIPT LINES OR
GIANT SHELLS. IN CHINA, THEY ARE CALLED "THE MOST
BEAUTIFUL IN THE WORLD" AND "THE ONLY ONES UNDER
THE CLOUDS.“
• IN SPRING, THE WATER IRRIGATES THE FIELDS AND THE
TERRACES LOOK LIKE BIG SHINY RIBBONS HANGING ON
THE SLOPES OF MOUNTAINS AND HILLS. IN EARLY SUMMER,
THE ASPIC RICE TURNS GREEN AND THE RICE TERRACES
LOOK LIKE CASCADES POURING DOWN FROM THE SKY OR
A “GREEN WAVE SPILLED FROM THE SKY”. WE GOT INTO
THE GAP BETWEEN THESE SEASONS, SO IN THE PHOTO
THERE ARE RIBBONS OF FLOODED TERRACES AND GREENERY
OF SEEDLINGS.
12.
RICE TERRACES• RICE TERRACES ON THE SLOPES OF THE PHILIPPINE CORDILLERA ARE
MAN-MADE GARDENS ERECTED MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND YEARS
AGO BY THE ANCESTORS OF THE IFUGAO INDIGENOUS PEOPLE. THE
LARGE-SCALE AGRICULTURAL "PROJECT" IS A MONUMENT TO PRECOLONIAL AGRICULTURE: THE IFUGAO ARE ONE OF THE FEW TRIBES
THAT HAVE LONG RESISTED FOREIGN DOMINATION, HAVING
MANAGED TO PRESERVE AN AUTHENTIC WAY OF LIFE. THE FIELDS
PLOWED ALONG THE STEEP SLOPES OF THE MOUNTAIN RANGE
HAVE CREATED AMAZING CULTURAL LANDSCAPES. AND THE
CHARACTERISTIC RELIEF WITH LEDGES, ON WHICH VEGETABLES AND
RICE ARE GROWN TO THIS DAY, SERVED AS AN ORIGINAL DEFENSIVE
STRUCTURE. RICE TERRACES ARE AN ICONIC LANDMARK AND A
NATIONAL TREASURE OF THE PHILIPPINE ARCHIPELAGO. THE PLOWED
MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES ARE DEPICTED ON THE COUNTRY'S
BANKNOTE, AND IN 1995 THEY WERE TAKEN UNDER UNESCO
PROTECTION. TODAY, AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPES ARE EXTREMELY
VULNERABLE: SOIL EROSION, DROUGHT AND WEEDS DESTROY
ACREAGE, ENDANGERING THE INTEGRITY OF THE MAN-MADE
MIRACLE.
13.
MOGAO CAVES• ACCORDING TO LEGEND, IN 366, A MONK NAMED
LUO TSUN HAD A VISION OF 1000 BUDDHAS,
AFTER WHICH HE BEGAN TO CUT DOWN THE FIRST
CAVE. MOGAO CAVES ARE LOCATED ON THE
GREAT SILK ROAD, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT
TRADE ROUTES OF THE EAST. THE MONK ASKED
PASSING MERCHANTS TO DONATE MONEY FOR THE
CONSTRUCTION OF CAVES. WITH THE SPREAD OF
CHINESE MAHAYANA BUDDHISM, WHICH PROMISES
DELIVERANCE NOT ONLY TO MONKS, BUT ALSO TO
