• Australia is located between the Indian and Pacificoceans in the southern hemisphere. It covers 7,692,030
square kilometres and is the 6th largest country (in
terms of size) behind Russia, Canada, China, USA and
Brazil. Australia is the smallest continent and is the only
country in the world to cover an entire continent. It
extends 3860 kilometres from east and west, and 3220
kilometres from north to south. Australia is mostly a flat
continent with the majority of the country being arid or
semi-arid. In fact, 80% of the Australian continent
receives a median rainfall of less than 600 millimetres
per year!

...Now the wind grew strong and hard,it worked at the rain crust
in the corn fields.
Little by little the sky
was darkened by the mixing dust,
and the wind felt over the earth,
loosened the dust and carried it away.

written by John Steinbeck.

• By far the largest part of Australia is desert or semiarid — 40% of the landmass is covered by sand dunes.Only the south-east and south-west corners have a
temperate climate and moderately fertile soil. The
northern part of the country has a tropical climate: part is
tropical rainforests, part’s grasslands, and part’s desert.
• Rainfall is highly variable, with frequent droughts
lasting several seasons. Occasionally a duststorm will
blanket a region or even several states and there are
reports of the occasional large cyclones or tornado.
