The flag of the United
Kingdom is known as
the Union Jack. It is the
British flag . The UK flag
has three colours:
white, blue and red.

It is made up of
individual Flags of
three of the Kingdom’s
countries – England,
Scotland ‘Northern
Ireland’
As Wales was
not a Kingdom but a
Principality it could not
be included in
the flag

In 1194, Richard 1
(the first) of
England introduced
the Cross of St.
George, a red cross
on a white ground,
as the National Flag
of England.

• After Queen
Elizabeth I of
England died in
1603, King James
VI of Scotland
inherited the
English throne
and became King
James I of
England. Each
country still kept
their own
parliaments.

On the first of January 1801, Ireland was united
with Great Britain. The cross St. Patrick was
combined with the Union Flag of St. Andrew

It is interesting to
notice that the
Union Jack is
also a part of the
flags of Australia
and New
Zealand. King
James III
ordered that the
flag should be
flown on the
main mast of all
British ships.
