A compound noun is a fixed expression which is made up ofmore than one word and functions as a noun.
Compound nouns may be written as two words, e.g. blood
donor, or they may be written with a hyphen, e.g. penname, or as one word, e.g. lipstick.
They can refer to a specific part of something: a door handle, or they can specify the
purpose of an object:
a carwash.
