From 1397 to 1523 there was a personal union of the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway
and Sweden under the supreme authority of the Danish kings. Countries sacrificed
their sovereignty but retained broad autonomy.

Relations between Russia and Norway were established in 1905 after Norway
gained independence. Russia has an embassy in Oslo and consulates in
Barentsburg and Kirkenes; Norway maintains an embassy in Moscow and
consulates in St. Petersburg, Murmansk and Arkhangelsk.
