What is an organization?
An organization is a grouping of people, assets, material, and knowledge, that are coordinated to
meet a set of objectives (or serve a purpose)
Richard Pascale:
‘Organizations are, in the last analysis, interactions among people’.

Organizational behavior
What Are Some Common Problems that Organizational
Behavior Tries to Solve?
Organizational
behavior can be used
by managers and
consultants to improve
the performance of an
organization and to
address certain key
issues that commonly
arise
2023
Organizational behavior is the study of human behavior
in an organizational setting. This includes how individuals
interact with each other in addition to how individuals
interact with the organization itself. Organizational
behavior is a critical part of human resources, though it is
embedded across a company.

6
Organizations as structure
The nature of an organization can be viewed in two ways:
as a process
or set of
processes
2023
or as a structure
or framework of
relationships.

7
Organizations as structure
Peter Drucker suggested we can understand and analyze
organizational structure in terms of three: activities, decision
making and relationships.
However, what is important to know is that usually sitting
within whatever formal structure there is will be a number of
informal structures coexisting within the organization.

Organization as process
Processes
Organization is a body, that organizes stuff the processes
that it creates are there to make stuff happen. The second
perspective is taking a look at an organization from the
point of view of a value chain, a set of processes, that start
with something of low value and turn out something of
higher value, that enables the organization to earn the
revenue, that feeds it. In a way this is like looking at
organizations as an organism.
Grouping of
related activities
Securing the
resources
Division and
allocation of the
work
Delegating
authority
Coordinating the
efforts of different
persons and
groups.

Organization culture
Adrian Mclean and Judy Marshall gave a nice formal definition of
culture.
They define culture as «the collection of traditions, values, policies,
beliefs, and attitudes that constitute a pervasive context for
everything we do and think in an organization».

Organization culture
Peter Drucker said «culture eat strategy for breakfast» suggests that no matter
how good your strategy is if it is not consistent with the culture of the
organization then that strategy is likely to fail
