Pskov Kremlin

2.

The Pskov Kremlin (Krom) is often
called the pearl of ancient Russian
architecture. It is located on a rocky
shore at the confluence of the Pskov
River with the Velikaya River and
consists of two parts: the inner
fortress and the outer one Dovmont City. This location was not
chosen by chance, because the
Kremlin is surrounded by water on
three sides, and on the fourth there
was a ravine and impassable
swamps.

3.

The territory of the Kremlin resembles an elongated triangle from north to south. Here
is the Trinity Cathedral (height 72 meters), built in 1682-1699, and the former Veche
Square, where the Veche was held. The so-called Dovmont city adjoins the Pskov
Kremlin from the south. This name comes from the name of the Lithuanian Prince
Dovmont, who reigned in Pskov for 33 years – from 1266 to 1299. Here is the partially
preserved largest fortress tower in Europe, the circumference of which is 90 m Pokrovskaya Tower.

4.

The height of the walls is from 6 to 8 meters, the thickness is from 2.5 to 6 meters, which
played a huge role for the city – the Pskov Kremlin was built as an indestructible
defensive structure.
