Structure: how to organize
the elements of a problemsolution essay?
There are two main ways to
structure a problem-solution essay:
• “block” structure
• “chain” structure

“Block” Structure
• For the block structure, all
of the problems are listed
first, and all of the
solutions are listed
afterwards.

“Chain” Structure
• For the chain structure, each problem is
followed immediately by at least 2
solutions to that problem and the
evaluation of each of the solutions.
• Evaluation may include arguments
against one solution, to be less effective
and by concluding in favour of the other.
