Mamaev Kurgan is a symbol of the Victory of the Russian people in
the Great Patriotic War.
It is the Heart and Soul of Russia.

Mamaev Kurgan is a truly sacred place in Russia, which is a hill
on the bank of the Volga River, in Volgograd.
Its history is connected with the Great Patriotic War.
During the Battle of Stalingrad, this hill served as the site of
bloody battles with the Nazi invaders.

During the Great Patriotic War, Mamaev Kurgan was an important political
object.
On staff cards it was called "Height 102.0", since it was located on a hill from
which the path to Moscow opened.
It was a vital observation post, and it was necessary to guard it a matter of life
and death.
That is why Soviet soldiers swore to defend their Motherland.

It was decided to create a monument here in honor of the fallen soldiers
immediately after the Battle of Stalingrad.
The construction of the complex "Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" was
started in 1959.
The memorial was opened on October 15, 1967.
This complex consists of many different compositions that are worthy of
special mention.

From the foot of the memorial to its summit there are 200 steps.
This is equal to the number of days during which the Battle of Stalingrad
lasted.
Stone ruins reveal pictures of intense battles for every street, every house,
every floor.

The ruined walls overlook a large area - the largest area of Mamaev Kurgan - the
Heroes' Square. Most of the area is occupied by a huge pool in low granite banks,
symbolizing the Volga, on the banks of which the defenders of Stalingrad stood

The sculpture group is made up with a figure of mother who is bending above her died
son in an endless sorrow. It’s a collective figure of all soviet women who lost their closest
people during the war: sons, husbands, fathers.

The monument depicts a brave and strong man who blocks the path of the enemy with a powerful
torso.

a torch. The space is illuminated by an eternal flame. The names of people who
gave their lives in the defense of Stalingrad are listed on the funeral banners
