In 1872, several organizations of the city decided to
create an art gallery in Milwaukee, as the city grew
and there was no object for major art exhibitions.
For several years, their attempts did not lead to
anything until a resident of Milwaukee, Alexander
Mitchell, donated in 1882 to the city his collection,
which marked the beginning of a permanent art
gallery in the history of the city.

Currently, the museum complex covers an area of 341,000
square feet (31,700 m²): War Memorial Center (1957) Kahler
Building (1975) and Quadracci Pavilion (2001). The
Quadracci Pavilion received the Outstanding Structure
Award from the International Association for Bridge and
Structural Engineering in 2004 for its unique architecture.
The museum collection is spread over four floors and
includes works of art from antiquity to the present day.
