Listening Part A - Extra information.
• There is usually one consultation that involves a nurse or a doctor and a 2nd
consultation that involves a different health care professional.
• Not a standard structure- Symptoms -> Diagnosis-> Treatment. Variety of settings.
• The information on the test sheet will be presented in bullet points.
• Sub-headings are common
• Some untested information will be presented.
• The information will be patient-centered.
• Information will be paraphrased but with clear cues.
• The answer will always be heard in the recording (not implied).
• The information will be specific to the patient, not generic.
• You will not have to change word forms.
• Minor grammar and spelling mistakes are acceptable.

Listening Part A - Listening strategies.
1. When the recording starts, use the time allowed to look through the
questions carefully.
2. Scan the headings and questions so you know what to listen out for.
3. Use prediction skills – e.g., what vocabulary is likely to come up given this
topic.
4. Keep looking ahead at what is coming up - this will help to keep you focused
and to not lose your place.
5. Use the pauses in the recordings to finish writing, review, and prepare for the
next section.
6. Look for any simple spelling errors that may accidentally change the
meaning of your answer (‘message’ for ‘massage’, ‘bills’ for ‘pills’, etc.).

Testing Focus:
1. Gist: Overall meaning of the 40-60 second audio.
Could be answered by:
1. Combining information
2. Identifying inferred views
2. Detail: Understanding important detail. The detail
will not be factual , i.e., no numbers, times, etc.
* In both cases, distractors will be included in the set
of answers. These distractors will focus on other
parts of the dialogue/monologue that you will hear.

6 monologues or dialogues
6 different topics
The topics can be broad ranging.
If it is a dialogue, the interactions could be between:
a) HCW (Health Care Worker) + a colleague
b) HCW + a patient
c) HCW + manager
Scenarios include:
• Handover briefing
• Course of action
• Giving/checking instructions
• Giving feedback to colleagues
• Patient concerns

Listening Part B - Listening strategies.
Read the question carefully.
Highlight key words in each answer.
Try and remember synonyms related to the key words.
Consider the entire conversation.
In dialogues, the answer can be a combination of what
both people say.
Eliminate answers that you are sure are incorrect.

• Not specific facts/information deeper meaning.
• Candidates will need to understand larger portions of
audio.

Topics:
1. Variety of topics that are accessible to a wide range of
healthcare professionals.
2.Not just facts about the topic, but deeper views and
opinions on the topic.
3. Clearly structured and cued to guide candidates.

Listening Part C - Listening strategies.
• Read the questions carefully.
• Underline key words.
• In the context of the dialogue, try to infer the meaning of words
you are unsure of.
• Don’t get stuck on words that you are unsure of - they may not be
needed for you to understand the gist of the audio.
• Listen for signal words that will help you know when to move on to
the next question.
• Eliminate answers that you are sure are incorrect.
