History of State
Opening
• Traditions surrounding State
Opening and the delivery of a
speech by the Monarch can be
traced back as far as the 16th
century.
• The broad outlines of the
ceremony have remained largely
unchanged for centuries: a
procession by the Sovereign to
the Palace of Westminster is
followed by the assembling of the
Members of both Houses, and the
reading of the Speech.

on the first day of a new
parliamentary session
or shortly after a
general election.

of Parliament took place
on 10 May 2022, at the
start of the 2022-23
session of Parliament.

Monarch’s procession from

Household Cavalry.

Entrance and proceeds to the
Robing Room.
