In the beginning of XIII century John Lackland contained in the Tower of
lions. But the royal menagerie arose, when the successor of John Henry III
had received as a gift from the son-in-law and the Holy Roman emperor
Frederick II ii of hohenstaufen three leopard, polar bear and elephant.
With time, the menagerie was replenished with even greater number of
exotic animals and in the time of Elizabeth I, was opened for visitors. In the
1830s, the zoo in the Tower was abolished, and the animals were moved to
the new zoo, opened in london's Regent's park.
