3. Why have I chosen this book?
I’ve always loved books about vampires and alsoI was looking for a new hyperfixation, so I
decided that going for The Vampire Chronicles by
Anne Rice would be a really nice idea. Interview
with the vampire is the first book of the series. The
style is easy-to-read yet I learnt a lot of new
words and enriched my vocabulary.
4. Summary: Louis and Lestat
Louis is a young indigoplantation owner in 1791,
living just south of New
Orleans. Distraught after
the death of his brother,
not even wanting to live,
he meets Lestat. Lestat
turns him into a vampire
after expressing a wish
for his company, and the
two live on the plantation
for a while. Lestat feeds
on the slaves, but Louis is
overcome with guilt and
survives on animals.
5. Summary: Louis and Lestat
They are forced to leavewhen the slaves instigate
an uprising. Louis sets the
plantation on fire to
prevent word spreading
about vampires. Gradually,
Louis begins to feed on
humans, but he is bothered
by Lestat’s disregard for
human life.
Lestat has very
questionable morals, he’s
arrogant and irritating.
Louis feeds on a plagueridden child found next to
the body of her mother
and begins to think of
leaving Lestat.
6. Summary: Claudia
To prevent Louis’ leaving, Lestat turnsthe plague-ridden child into a vampire
to give Louis a “daughter.”
Their small dysfunctional family lives in
the middle of Paris and feeds on
humans, they have a lot of money and
power.
The child, Claudia, comes into killing
easily, but as she ages, she grows
discontented. Her mind matures into that
of a woman, but her body never does.
Claudia keeps her rage against Lestat
because she knows what he did to her,
that he saved her from dying but forced
her to be a five-year-old girl forever.
A little child she was, but also a fierce killer,
now capable of the ruthless pursuit of blood
with all a child’s demanding.
7. Summary: Louis and Claudia
After another sixty years,Claudia plots to kill Lestat
by poisoning him and
cutting his throat. Louis and
Claudia dump his body in
the swamp and prepare to
leave for Europe.
Lestat appears again, and
they set their house on fire
leaving him to burn and
perish.
Louis and Claudia go
travelling around Europe
together, hoping to find
another vampires. Lestat is
dead and they are finally
free.
8. Some More Thoughts
I really enjoy reading this book. I love the characters: ahumanlike vampire Louis, moody and violent Claudia and
arrogant yet charming Lestat.
Claudia’s story really made my heart ache. She didn’t deserve
being forced to live her life like an eternal child.
Lestat tried to create his own family and failed miserably.
When he was a human he had a lot of siblings and uncaring
parents. When he was young he was turned into a vampire
against his will, so behind his ignorance and acrimony hides a
hurt soul. Lestat took care of his sick father even after he
became a vampire. He did everything wrong and didn’t learn
from his mistakes, and I can’t even verbally explain how much I
love him.
