Grammar — Past Simple with Regular Verbs
In Beginner 2, we learned how to use the present simple tense to talk about
actions in the present. If we want to talk about actions that started and finished in
the past, we have to use a different tense, past simple.
To make the past simple tense, we have to change the infinitive form of the verb.
With regular verbs, this is very easy. We simply add the ending '-ed'. We use this
ending with all eight pronouns.
For example, here is the verb 'to want' in the past simple tense:
I wanted
It wanted
You wanted
We wanted
He wanted
You wanted
She wanted
They wanted

6.

There are some exceptions to this rule. Some regular verbs have a slightly different
spelling past simple tense. If a verb ends in the letter `e', we do not add an extra `e'
when we make the past simple.
Live -> I lived Like -> They liked
If a verb ends in a consonant and then the letter 'y', we change 'y' to 'i' before we add
the '-ed' ending.
Study -> He studied Marry -> She married
However, if a verb ends in a vowel and then the letter 'y', we do not change 'y' to 'i’.
Play -> You played Enjoy -> We enjoyed

7.

If the verb has one syllable, and finishes in one vowel and one
consonant, we double the final consonant.
Stop -> It stopped Knit -> I knitted
Finally, in British English, verbs that end in the letter 'I' change to a
double 'I' in past simple tense. In American English, the letter 'I' does
not usually become a double 'I’.
Travel -> We travelled (UK English)
We traveled (US English)
