mother, Mary Arden,

pupils had to be at
school at six in the
morning in the warm
seasons and an hour
later in winter. School
days were long, and
only during the
holidays William could
have a rest.

There is a story thatShakespeare’s first work
in London was holding a
rich men’s horses at the
theatre door. But nobody
can say whether this
story is true. Later
Shakespeare became an
actor and a member of
one of the big acting
companies. Soon he
began to write plays for
this company and in a
few years became a wellknown author.

The theater in the days ofShakespeare didn’t look
like our modern theatres.
It was a high round
building without any roof
except over the stage. In
winter the theatres were
closed. As there was no
light in those days, the
plays took place in day
time, between one and
three o’clock in the
afternoon.

theatre business.
Shakespeare was one
of the partners in the
theatre where he
acted and for which
he wrote his dramas.
It was the famous
Globe.

W. Shakespeare knew thestage and that helped him
to write the most
wonderful plays ever
written. Shakespeare wrote
37 plays. Among them are
tragedies such as Hamlet,
King Lear, Othello,
Macbeth, comedies such as
All’s Well that Ends Well,
the Twelfth Night, Much
Ado About Nothing,
historical dramas such as
Henry IV, Richard III.

William Shakespearedied in Stratford on
23 April 1616. In
Stratford there is a
church where
Shakespeare was
buried. It is Holy
Trinity Church.

are the lines written
by Shakespeare
himself.
