History of UlanUde• The city was founded in 1666 as a
Cossack winter hut on the right bank
of the Selenga river at the confluence
of the Uda River. In 1678 the winter
hut was transformed into a prison,
which in 1775 received the status of a
city and the name Verkhneudinsk.
Since 1923 Verkhneudinsk has been
the capital of the Buryat-Mongolian
Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
In 1934 the city was renamed UlanUde, which means "Red Uda" in the
Buryat language. Now the area of the
city is 347.6 km2. The population is
438 thousand people.
3. Monument to V. I. Lenin
Monument to V.I. Lenin
Monument erected in 1971, in the year of the
centenary of V. I. Lenin. The authors are sculptors George and Yuri Nerody. The monument is located
on the main square of the city - the Soviet square.
This monument is of particular interest to the guests
of the capital. It is a pedestal on which stands a
statue of the head of the leader, more than 7 meters
high, together with a pedestal of 14 meters. The
dimensions of the statue of the head of the leader
are impressive and are not surpassed in any city in
the world.
4. Monument to A. B. Tsydenzhapov
• It is located in the square, next tothe monument "Peers who went into
battle." The monument
immortalized the memory of the
sailor, hero of Russia Adlar
Tsydenzhapov, a native of Buryatia,
who was only 19 years old. In
2010, he put out a fire in the engine
room of the destroyer Bystry and
saved the crew from possible
death at the cost of his life.

club of the city in 2010. It made of
bronze. The official title is Clash of
Kings. Not far from the "Chess Kings" is
another composition, much smaller in
size - a cat and a mouse also play
chess.
8. "Mother Buryatia"
"Mother Buryatia"• Sculpture of a woman in a national
costume with a traditional Buryat khadak in
her hands - a symbol of kindness and
hospitality. People call it "Hospitable
Buryatia". Sculptor Erdeni Tsydenov. The
total height, together with the pedestal,
reaches 16 meters. It was installed in 2002
in the city center, but in 2008 it was moved
to the Selenginsky bridge. Now it is on the
way from the airport to the city center and
meets residents and guests of Ulan-Ude.
9. «Rinpoche Bagsha»
«Rinpoche Bagsha»• The Buddhist temple «Rinpoche Bagsha» is located in Lysaya Gora, one
of the highest and picturesque place in Ulan-Ude. It was set up in 2000
by Mr. Eshe Lodoi Rinpoche and his supporters with the blessing of
Dalai Lama IV as a Buryat republican public institution «Tibetan cultural
center «Rinpoche Bagsha». In 2002 году it was renamed as Buddhist
center Rinpoche Bagsha. Besides religious office services the center
delivers training to everybody who would like to learn more about
Buddhism. In February 2004 statue of the largest in Russia and probably
in Europe Gold Buddha was brought from China and placed in the
temple. Its height is 5 meters. In 2013 on the territory of the temple
complex "Rinpoche Bagsha" view-point was re-built. It is located at the
height of 888 meters above sea level. The good location gives
opportunity to the guests of the datsan (temple) to see wonderful
panorama of Ulan-Ude and the river Selenga.

• Hodigitriya cathedral temple named in honor of Holy Mother Hodigitriya is thefirst stone building in Verkhneudinsk town . The construction started in 1741. The
lower floor or the chapel was consecrated in 1770 in the name of Holy
Theophany, the second floor in the name of Holy Mother Hodigitriya was
consecrated in 1783. Thus the construction lasted for almost half a century, forty
four years. The general composition of the cathedral includes three parts: the
cathedral, the dining room of a monastery, and a bell tower built longitudinally
from the west to the east as a single complex. The cathedral itself is overarched
with a high dome without a roof and a two high flashlight. Round frontons with
four-leaved dressing fancy corbel arches are smoothly united with the dome.
Hodigitriya cathedral occupies the leading position among other orthodox
churches of Verkhneudinsk region by the number of parishioners, interior
decoration, church plate and the library. The cathedral was closed in 1929. In
1934 there was an anti-religeous museum and thanks to this fact the building
was preserved. In 1990 it was transferred to the Russian orthodox ward. In 2004
the upper chapel was blessed by a metropolitan Kirill who is now a Patriarch of
Russian Orthodox Church.
