HISTORY OF USAID
On November 3, 1961, President John F. Kennedy
signed the Foreign Assistance Act reorganizing the
structure of U.S. foreign assistance programs.
By executive order, he created a new agency, the
United States Agency for International Development
(USAID).
The modern-day concept of international
development assistance took shape after World
War II ended in 1945.

George C. Marshall, the Secretary of State from
1947 to 1949 provided significant financial and
technical assistance to Europe after the war.
USAID was subsequently established by the
executive order of President John F. Kennedy,
who sought to unite several existing foreign
assistance organizations and programs under one
agency.
USAID became the first U.S. foreign assistance
organization whose primary focus was long-term
socioeconomic development.

USAID FINANCE
Most funding for USAID is appropriated
through the Department of State, Foreign
Operations, and Related Programs
Appropriations bill.
The notable exception is funding for
international food aid under the Food for Peace
program, also known as P.L. 480,
which is funded through Agriculture
appropriations legislation.

The cost of supplying USAID's assistance
includes the agency's "Operating Expenses,"
$1.35 billion in fiscal year 2012, and "Bilateral
Economic Assistance" program costs, $20.83
billion in fiscal year 2012 (the vast bulk of which
was administered by USAID).

USAID ACHIVMENT
Provided food assistance to more than 53 million
people in 47 countries in crisis in 2016.
Responded to 52 crises in 52 countries and
deployed a record-breaking 6 simultaneous
Disaster Assistance Response Teams in 2016
providing life-saving assistance to tens of millions
of people including those enduring the Ebola
outbreak, an earthquake in Ecuador, and conflict
in Syria.

Reached more than five million survivors of genderbased violence with services including medical care,
counselling, legal help, and other support since
2012.
Saved the lives of 4.6 million children and 200,000
women since 2009.
Helped 9.5 million people attain life-saving AIDS
treatments, in collaboration with inter-agency
partners through the President’s Eme.rgency Plan
for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in 2015.
Saved 6 million lives through the President’s
Malaysia Initiative since 2007.

USAID RELATION WITH INDIA
USAID partners with the Indian Government
and the private sector to eliminate preventable
child and maternal deaths, create an AIDS- and
TB-free generation and achieve universal health
coverage.
USAID is improving health by advancing access
to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene
in India's growing cities.
